Introduced back in 1986, PepsiCo’s Mug Root Beer saw a slump in sales, as the product was no longer attracting the wide range of consumers that it did the years following the product’s release. To appeal to a larger consumer base, PepsiCo hired Lien Design (in cooperation with MLR Design) for a brand redesign, making the product’s packaging and logo more dimensional and contemporary to attract children and teens.

Looking to broaden its appeal as a desirable and modern snacking brand, and reinstate its iconic status, in an increasingly competitive and changing world of savoury snacks, Jacob’s challenged Pearlfisher to create a contemporary visual identity.
Our impactful big idea - “Baked in” - celebrates and honours Jacob’s baking expertise and heritage and inspired our approach to the redesign - taking the emotion of baking into snacking to build a contemporary interpretation of the great story of Jacob’s.
By amplifying the brand’s most-recognised and loved equities to create a modern, vibrant and robust visual identity - and the creation of a new geometric pattern of crackers to form a wall of Jacob’s on shelf – we are building greater recognition and reinforcing brand equity and stand-out or the future of one of Britain’s most-loved and iconic brands.

Solution. Umpqua Oats has the product to compete against the mushy instant oatmeal competition. With whole rolled oats, real ingredients and none of those added fillers Quaker uses to save costs, Umpqua Oats is exactly what Millennials are looking for. Hitting the oatmeal aisle with bright white and a bold use of black and bright colors instantly attracts attention in a sea of beige. An image with appetite appeal is easy to execute because their product is REAL.Nothing shows the Umpqua difference more than image and video so we art directed a series of videos to be used online and in social media. Tooshlights is the first and only restroom traffic management system that will increase traffic flow and efficiency in public restrooms by letting the guest know “where to go”.
When a stall is occupied, the smart latch is activated, the indicator light on the ceiling above the stall turns red. When the guest leaves the stall and opens the smart latch, the light turns green.
The smart latches communicate wirelessly with the indicator lights, which in turn are linked as a network to a wireless hub. The hub stores the usage frequency of each stall and communicates the information to the facility’s computer system. This information allows efficient scheduling of servicing, supplies and cleaning, by predicting service intervals based on usage. The system can also show if a stall goes down.
Occupancy information can also potentially be fed to an app, that can show a guest in a large venue which restroom has more open stalls.
Tooshlights came to M Industrial Design as a start up with just two employees and a simple working prototype. Our brief was to redesign and reengineer the Tooshlights to meet some tough design goals. The appearance design had to be beautiful enough to inspire architects to specify it, the housing had to accommodate electronics, switch and battery and be no wider than 1” to accommodate variable site conditions. It had to be rugged enough to withstand the public restroom environment.
M Industrial Design handled the design and engineering of the product, including the oversight of the electronics design of the smart latch, indicator and Hub.
MID also fabricated the first working prototypes, produced all production documentation and inspected and approved first article production parts.
Tooshlights has now been installed in several major airports and sports stadiums across the US and is well on its way to success.

Following the success of their Rice Ramen noodle line, Lotus Foods wanted to continue to evolve their brand by creating a more convenient and portable product—the instant noodle cup. Entering a totally new space, they turned to Bulldog Drummond to help them transform this popular but outdated category with a healthier, more flavorful and sustainably sourced rice noodle option that would stand out on shelf.
Bulldog explored new designs that blend Lotus Foods’ more sophisticated and natural look with more fun and whimsical design elements. Bold typographic lockups keep a strong connection to the core brand, while bright colors and playful patterns push this line into a more modern space. Partnered with clever language, the packaging brings the flavors to life while clearly differentiating this cup from its bland competitive shelf set. Launching in traditional Asian flavors, like Tom Yum and Red Miso, this Rice Ramen is poised to help reinvigorate a staid category and look great doing it.

Branding is more than creating a fancy logo or good looking website. For us, and we’ve been doing this for 20+ years, it’s foremost about finding a unique message, a signal that stands out in a noisy environment. Today we are flooded with information like no other generation before us. The average consumer receives the equivalent amount of 34 Gb (gigabytes) of information every day, a sufficient quantity to overload a laptop within a week. (University of California-San Diego). Delivering a strong message is paramount to help consumers (or investors) navigate through the flood. And often branding has to fight on two fronts: it has to disrupt - and connect, too. Disrupt the crowded field and connect with the players, to stay within the sports analogy. What we created for Shawmut, a smart textiles manufacturer from New England, was in some way a 360 pivot from their 100-years tradition. We often see that tradition is not a strong sales argument anymore in times where the rapid cycle of innovation defines the rhythm. Tradition can only serve as foundation of trust, as a scaffolding, not as the actual driver behind a contemporary product or service. This is what we needed to reflect in the brand message and visuals: Shawmut is delivering innovative fabrics for today’s needs and standards in the automobile, medical and defense industries. A strong logo that consists of two interlocking circles shaped like a letter S, bold colors and vibrant visuals signal the new direction and aspiration of this company.
Swiss-born Marc Posch founded the Marc Posch Design Office in Munich/Germany. Under his leadership, the company developed a reputation for innovative thinking and design that helped his clients grow their business. His office created branding and design concepts for over 300 technology companies

Slingshot competes in a varied category comprised of both older, more established brands and newer, edgier 'upstart' brands. The challenge was to create a label that could compete in both categories. The brand name, Slingshot, is catchy and memorable, but it had previously been paired with a more conservative and conventional label. The new package design needed to tell the story of the wine and convey, in the words of second-generation proprietor James Stewart, the truth that “wine should be fun”. Slingshot, a wine for casual enjoyment, brings a bit of irreverence to a product category that can feel overly serious. At the same time, the package design needed to exceed price point look and feel expectations, and reinforce to the consumer that they are getting something very special for the price.
Finding that the original label and packaging did not match the brand's young, irreverent spirit, CF Napa developed the tagline, “Irreverently Made in the Napa Valley”. Then, building on the refined positioning and equity of the existing slingshot logo, we found a graphic image that would dramatically convey the brand's upstart personality: a bull's-eye. The image both familiar and impactful was perfectly suited to take the visual lead on the label. The resulting label design features a hole that is die-cut through the bull's-eye and the label itself, allowing the glass of the bottle to show through as if the label has been shot through by a slingshot projectile. The effect completes what is undeniably one of the more eye-catching wine label designs on the market today.
Over the past 15 years, David Schuemann has led CF Napa Brand Design to become one of the world’s preeminent branding agencies specializing in the alcohol beverage category. During that time, CF Napa has created some of the fastest-growing and most successful alcohol brands in the world. The firm’s

Winrock International is an global development and aid non-profit that focuses on social, agricultural and environmental issues. The group formed officially in 1985 when three affiliated organizations merged, but Winrock has a history leading all the way back to the mid-century philanthropic work of Winthrop Rockefeller.
Winrock first approached our agency with an interest in updating their web site, which turned into a larger project involving a total refresh of the group’s brand, public impression, and logo. The result was a clean, modern mark that gave them more versatility in use and higher, better quality impact with their audience.
After establishing the new brand, we moved on to Winrock’s web site. Working hand-in-hand with the client, we all came to realize early on that the scope of the project was far greater than a simple site redesign. The result was a total restructuring of the way Winrock thought about itself as an organization and a complete re-telling of their story to their audience.
We began the site design process by boiling down the organization’s priorities in messaging and user action and streamlining the content and information architecture from there. After months of design, planning, and development work with the client, the new site launched in spring of 2016.Features include a fully responsive design with customized mobile layout and navigation, interactive world map technology, highly structured categories and sub-categories that capture the organization’s work geographically and by issue area, a low bandwidth option, multi-language functionality to translate any and all pages of the site, and custom illustrations, among others. After the site launch, our agency focused on a multitude of other projects with Winrock for both screen and print.
