ChallengeAfter five editions of consistently high-quality publications, the American Cancer Society and Vital Strategies sought to create a more readable and engaging experience for users perusing the Atlas. With loads of data and no clear hierarchy of where to look or go next, they wanted the Sixth Edition of the Tobacco Atlas to capitalize on interactive opportunities, have a stronger narrative, a unified visual language, and an easy-to-use digital system both for users and administrators.
SolutionOne of the main challenges with the previous print report was that it overwhelmed the readers with data and the content flow was cluttered. To fix this, we prioritized the creation of a narrative, using an illustrator to draw custom visuals for every chapter to connect the reader to the content. We also trimmed down the amount of data by prioritizing what needed to be in print and what could live online-only, and then designed clear invitations for the reader to find more on the website.
For the interactive version of the Tobacco Atlas, we took these same strong visual and narrative storytelling principles guiding the print design, and leveraged interactive elements and web best practices to create a digital resource. What were static maps in the print report are now dynamic data visualizations, and the illustrative components create a unique experience for the user. Through powerful calls to action (CTAs) and intentional UX design, we worked hard to better anticipate ways to keep the user on the site and engaged. The website is also translated into multiple languages, making it accessible to a broader audience.

LitPix is a beautiful, handcrafted wooden sculpture that, through LED, backlights photos printed from your phone using our simple iOS & website.
LitPix needed to enable consumers to create and customize their own LitPix lightbox via mobile and web. It was also important that they would be able to visualize the end product before receiving it. Nolte developed the digital assets while LitPix built physical prototypes and then the actual product.
It began in late 2016. Nolte, along with Litpix’s marketing and research teams, mapped out the user experience to ensure the solution aligned with consumer and client expectations. In total, every phase of the project - strategy, design, development, and testing - took about six months to complete.
DISCOVERY & STRATEGY
During the discovery and strategy phase, we determined that the best way to bring LitPix into the hands of consumers is to meet them where they take and store their photos, i.e. the phone.. While LitPix’s vision is to reimagine the environment where digital photos exist, it became evident that technology was needed to play a critical role in the purchasing experience.
The insights and validation we gathered in our research allowed our teams to conclude that a custom web and mobile experience was a better way to deliver LitPix than that of a traditional e-commerce site. The user experience simulated how customers would purchase a LitPix if they were in a physical location. Customers can choose their own image and box to showcase what the actual product would look like before deciding to complete the checkout.
Since LitPix is a Kickstarter project, we wanted to back the Kickstarter launch with the web and mobile launch. We are powering the application from a centralized database while an Angular web application consumes the API and handles all the presentation for web.

Express Newark (EN), located in the historic Hahne & Company building in Newark NJ, is dedicated to a collaboration between community partners and Rutgers University-Newark in which community and university work together and communicate on equal footing in what has been called a "third space."
Working closely with the Express Newark leadership and community partners, our goal was to create an appropriate platform that represents the organizations’ powerful mission. Expressnewark.org is a mirror of the Express Newark community: eleven partnerships and over eighty contributors spanning diverse disciplines, who collaborate and engage in public work and creative practice.
The website aggregates each partnership and contributors’ work and activities, whether exhibitions, events, stories, or video series. The dynamic color palette of the Express Newark logomark is used to categorize these different types of content which are seen separately on the Exhibits archive page, or Events archive page, but are combined into one “feed” on the Express Newark Home page, and each partnerships’ page.
In this way, the website emulates the real-time activities and happenings of the entire Express Newark community and ecosystem – a “third space.”

Since the start of DME back in 2010, they have been pioneering and innovating in the world of engine software, delivering results and a reputation that spoken about throughout the automotive tuning world. Fast-forward 9 years, Azai Studios was awarded the opportunity to re-position their brand in their current marketplace. Our team took on this project with a new brand strategy, a fresh visual identity, art directed content, and a fully custom e-commerce platform. To create its brand identity, we designed with the Oylo team a bold brand values structure, which placed trust as the main purpose. The whole brand and communication strategy is based on emotional hyperbole and inaccessibility. However as of January 2018, PSD2 now enables businesses other than banks, to securely access customer financial and account-based information.
Open Banking is encouraging innovation across the financial service sector, enabling industry wide disruption.
The success of Open Banking, is dependant on strong consumer adoption,and with a large stakeholder group including banks, third-parties, consumer groups and government it became apparent that design thinking was needed to help align disparate conversation.
A need to define what the best possible user experience will look like for the whole of the UK. We supported the Open Banking team to turn hard-to-digest technical specifications into interactive experiences that could be tested with real users.
With over 120 tested user experiences, we turned our insights into design standards. This has seen a 50% increase in API calls from May to June.
