Building a marketplace to help a plant seller disrupt its own 100-year-old business
Building a marketplace that connects buyers and suppliers on a single, price-transparent platform is a great idea — unless it’s competing with your wholesale business.
For over 100 years, the Fiore family has been supplying trees and shrubs to landscapers across the country. Their business, Fiore Nursery and Landscape Supply, operated on the standard wholesale model: they sourced the greenery from growers across the country, and buyers came to them to purchase all the plants they’d need for building sites, golf courses, even zoos. Now Lisa Fiore, the fourth generation of the Fiore Nurseries family, wanted to use all that industry knowledge to create an online marketplace that would disrupt the family’s original business — before someone else did. And she came to Table XI to do it.
The result is LandscapeHub, a web-based, responsive, two-sided marketplace platform built in Rails and React. To learn what we needed to build, we started with a Google Design Sprint, an Inception and a lot of user research to validate everyone’s ideas. Then we paired with LandscapeHub as it built out a technical team, teaching their new hires how we solved tricky data problems and built a marketplace strong enough to support future growth.
The MVP we launched attracted investor interest — enough to turn LandscapeHub into a fully-funded marketplace startup. And it’s self-reliant. We worked with LandscapeHub’s new developers and CTO to fully transition ownership of the product, so they can run with it without needing our help.

MOVE Bumpers started as a local custom truck bumper service in Lewistown, Montana in 2013 and quickly evolved into a nationwide, industry leading bumper distributor. To match their growing significance in the industry, MOVE needed an ecommerce website that could keep up with its tremendous growth and brand recognition.
In 2017 we launched a rebrand and a new MOVE Bumpers website, which includes the customized, interactive Bumper Kit Builder feature: a complete game-changer in the DIY bumper building experience.
Through audience research, we discovered that users respond better to a buying process that feels less like a transaction and more like an experience: the more interactive, visual and fun the better. The Bumper Kit Builder is an interactive online shopping experience that allows users to easily swap out different bumper styles and customizations on a sample truck rendering. As customers make selections, the sample truck and price update in real-time to reflect each customization. The site is also 100% mobile-friendly and mobile-compatible, which allows for easy use from any location.
Since the 2017 re-launch, MOVE Bumpers has seen a 70% increase in conversions during yearly holiday seasons, and a 10% increase in traffic overall.
The new site, which boasts a cleaner, more updated UI/UX, is not only more visually appealing but also far more user-friendly.

ChallengeAfter five editions of consistently high-quality publications, the American Cancer Society and Vital Strategies sought to create a more readable and engaging experience for users perusing the Atlas. With loads of data and no clear hierarchy of where to look or go next, they wanted the Sixth Edition of the Tobacco Atlas to capitalize on interactive opportunities, have a stronger narrative, a unified visual language, and an easy-to-use digital system both for users and administrators.
SolutionOne of the main challenges with the previous print report was that it overwhelmed the readers with data and the content flow was cluttered. To fix this, we prioritized the creation of a narrative, using an illustrator to draw custom visuals for every chapter to connect the reader to the content. We also trimmed down the amount of data by prioritizing what needed to be in print and what could live online-only, and then designed clear invitations for the reader to find more on the website.
For the interactive version of the Tobacco Atlas, we took these same strong visual and narrative storytelling principles guiding the print design, and leveraged interactive elements and web best practices to create a digital resource. What were static maps in the print report are now dynamic data visualizations, and the illustrative components create a unique experience for the user. Through powerful calls to action (CTAs) and intentional UX design, we worked hard to better anticipate ways to keep the user on the site and engaged. The website is also translated into multiple languages, making it accessible to a broader audience.

Saint Mary of the Woods College (SMWC) contacted MJK to help them create a new, mobile friendly website for the college. The previous website was not mobile friendly, and had become unmanageable at over 1,500 pages. SMWC wanted to create a new website with fresh copy and photography that is world-class, scalable, secure, and easy to maintain via WordPress.
User Experience DesignMJK began by conducting research which included a complete content audit of the 1,500+ page website. The audit was performed using a collaborative software which enabled our user experience experts to present an optimal sitemap for the new website. SMWC was then able to review, organize, and comment on content pages within the interactive sitemap, and eliminate any old content pages.
Website PrototypeOur user experience designers then produced a working grayscale prototype of the new website that was fully interactive and viewable on desktop and mobile phone devices. This approach enabled the client to navigate the website and get adequate administrative buy-in on the proposed architecture before design and development began.
Website Look & FeelA key point of difference for the college is its connection with nature and wildlife. It’s not unusual to see students horseback riding on campus. This led our award-winning designers to place leaf-like design elements within the site to help convey the college’s unique wooded campus environment. Large, beauty shots of the students, the building architecture, and the campus grounds give visitors a glimpse of what life is like at the college. Several info graphics also help to convey key facts to help students determine if the school is right for them.DevelopmentMJK leveraged WordPress CMS to manage the content for the enormous website.ResultsThe client continues to receive tremendous feedback on the design and usability of the website. WHAT WE DID
Slide UX advanced Fathom's mission with heuristic reviews of their current software, wireframes, and visual designs for their next-gen release, and product mapping for their long term vision. We paired with an internal designer to ensure that the end consumer had a seamless experience when using the consumer mobile app.
The showpiece of our work was a high-fidelity rapid prototype using live, embedded data visualizations from Periscope, layered with rich interactions around a specific large municipality's use case.

Travel advertising tends to fall into one of two extremes. You’re either faced with high-pressure sales tactics where deals expire, rooms run out and there’s always pressure to “book now” or suffer the consequences. Or they prey on people’s FOMO, pushing the idyllic, and often unrealistic, dream vacation
But on Hotwire, deals never run out. This inspired us to take the pressure out of a high-pressure category in a campaign we aptly call The No Pressure Zone. In this paradoxical wrinkle in time, deals are available for an unlimited time always and supplies last all the while. So you can book now. Or later. Or whenever. With the laid-back Martin Starr as our anti-spokesperson and Karl as his super chill spokesgoat, this fantastical world was a much-needed respite from the high-pressure sales tactics of a FOMO-filled category.

San Francisco—the most environmentally conscious city in the country, right? Turns out, when it comes to recycling and composting, there’s room for improvement. Especially among transplants—25% of all residents.
How do you change human behavior? Nagging doesn’t work. So we relied on insights about motivation. Turns out, peer pressure works. #SFThingToDo was born.
Launched on outdoor boards across the City, we struck a chord—and motivated behavior—by leveraging local charm and idiosyncrasies: steep hills, dating apps, and the interminable wait for coffee.
The campaign was so successful, SFE brought us back the following year for another effort, targeting food-obsessed Millennials.
So, we came up with Real Foodies Compost. The result? One happy client, and fewer dramatic banana peel slips.
