Calm Intuitive App Design

Calm is a meditation app designed to help users reduce stress, sleep better, and develop a greater overall sense of peace.

The app was one of Apple’s Best of 2017 Apps of the Year. As the “#1 App for Mindfulness and Meditation” Calm promises to bring “clarity, joy, and peace to your daily life.”

On launching the Calm app for the first time, users are asked to indicate what their goals for using it. Options include improving sleep, reducing anxiety, and improving focus, among others. Calm is run on a subscription model and users are encouraged to create an account and begin a 7-day free trial of the premium version. Some content, though, is available for free.

The home screen of the app is dominated by a series of looping nature videos that users can swipe through to personalize the experience based on the landscapes that appeal to them most. Navigation is handled through a handful of icons centered at the bottom of the screen, with account information located through an icon at top left.

Each of the main app categories -- Music, Meditate and Sleep -- present content through a card-based layout that is easily navigated. Users can choose different content pathways based on their specific needs. For example, they can choose a path entitled 21 Days of Calm, or 7 Days of Self-Esteem. Content can also be narrowed by toggling through different categories at the top of the screen (eg; anxiety, sleep, and stress).

Calm has a fresh design that makes for a delightful user experience. The use of imagery and movement gives the app a bold and memorable aesthetic.
