The Penny Drop’s Print Designs Bring Modern Sophistication To The Cafe Experience
The Penny Drop is an Australian cafe that brings a new perspective to food and coffee in the Box Hill area. It’s an innovative and exciting brand with a bold presence, offering a memorable dining experience.
The brand is contemporary, and their food is inspiring. They bring a touch of Chinatown to the area and add a liveliness to the community that can’t be ignored.
But they needed a more well-rounded brand identity to complement their dining experience and turned to agency Pop & Pac to bring these dreams to life.
This is what the design team at Pop & Pac had to say about this branding and print design project:
Inspired by the site’s context, a name and conceptual vision was developed by the graphic design team for an experience not before seen in this area of Melbourne’s East. Pennies provide inspiration throughout; evident in brass menu finishes, the shapes of business cards and coasters, and use of circular elements. Bill folders are reinterpreted as leather wallets. The result is a comprehensive suite of collateral, including custom typeface, menus, coffee cups, stickers, hoarding and signage.
Inspiring, enigmatic and bright — those are just a few words to describe these contemporary and clean print materials. And they certainly stand out.
The Penny Drop’s Sleek Color Palette Creates A Peaceful Atmosphere
One of the first things that jump out at you from this design is the colors used. They are clean, clear and pleasing to the eye. The color palette is a neutral one, with soft whites, clean beiges, and subtle greys.
It’s easing and soothing. You feel immediately satiated upon seeing these smooth and soft lines.
There’s a fluidity that comes from this color scheme — it’s light and airy and bright. There is no real stake here, no stress and no concern. All the anxiety washes away like these colors wash over the materials. That's why skilled print designers often opt for neutral tones that strike a balance between being visually appealing and not overpowering the overall design.
And even the illustrations lack a dynamic quality in their coloring. They sit in a black and white color palette — but lack the brightness that usually comes from the contrast between white and black colors.
There are modern, bronze finishes as well, but these too are subdued and serene.
This design overall is soft — it’s almost tangible. You can reach out and run your hands along this design and know it’s smooth.
And that’s what you want while dining — a smooth, seamless and streamlined experience that takes the worry out of your day and lets you just relax.
These colors match the overall branding of the cafe. Inside of its doors, the similar color scheme is found in the art, in the finishes and in the decoration. It’s a contemporary, clean and cohesive design that keeps branding consistent and lulls patrons into peaceful satisfaction.
Bold Accents And Exciting Images Make These Penny Drop Prints Pop
This airy and clean design puts you at ease, but bright, contemporary and modern pops of shiny color and illustration really take this design to the next level.
Bronze finishes can be found throughout the cafe — in light fixtures, on cookware, and in its decoration. But these bronze splashes can also be seen on the print materials, coasters and business cards.
These bronze pops exude modernity, class, and sophistication. They are edgy and contemporary — staying neutral, but bombastic.
Similarly, these creative and smooth designs integrate clever illustrations and images that add a dynamic and innovative element to these designs. On cups, menus and more you can see the same jumping characters.
A man in a suit and a woman in a skirt can be seen jumping from the page, almost up into the air and above. This adds a lightness. This adds an airiness. It elevates and excites and mesmerizes in a soft, sophisticated and contemporary manner.
There’s also a subtle mystery that leaves things to the imagination.
It’s a stunning display of experts' in branding' creativity that adds depth and excitement to a brand’s visual language.
The Penny Drop’s Print Collateral Adds A Contemporary And Playful Vibe To The Brand
These print designs for The Penny Drop cafe are contemporary, clean and bright. They are full of excitement and creativity, while still holding a modern edge that is crisp, simple and sophisticated.
These designs are just as dynamic and engaging as they are simple and soft. There’s a peaceful vibe that radiates off of these menus and cups — it comes from the clean, empty space, bright airy colors and minimal imagery.
But when you do see this imagery, it pops.
Creative and exciting characters jump from the designs — literally, these designs are made up of jumping people. You don’t see their faces, just their legs leaping off of the ground and into the great beyond.
It’s mysterious, edgy and thought-provoking.
This, matched with the bright and modern bronze finishes really brings the design full circle. It’s a captivating design that eases, excites and inspires.
