Uber Minimalist App Design

The best-known transportation app on the market, Uber has gone from a small startup to an industry disruptor in a matter of years. Through the app, users can order a ride directly to their current location, eliminating the hassle of standing on the street trying to hail a cab or waiting on hold to speak with an operator at a cab company.

It’s easy to understand Uber’s immense popularity. The app addresses many taxi customers’ pain points. The visual display of available cars on the map of the user’s surroundings, along with the estimated wait time for a ride to arrive at the user’s location eliminates the uncertainty involved in calling a cab company (eg; how long will it take for my cab to arrive?). Once a ride is requested, the app uses GPS to display the car’s advancement toward the pick-up point, which keeps the user updated about arrival time. The app even allows users to quickly book a ride in advance for pick-up in the future. Previous destinations are saved and easily accessible, cutting down the time it takes a user to request a ride. If the user enters a destination manually, the address is dynamically populated as they type, also helping to reduce the burden on the user.

The app has a simple, elevated, and minimalist design which has been hard for competitive apps to match. Lightweight grey and black typography keeps the experience of using the app feel uncluttered and easy. The app experience is characterized by microinteractions that reduce interstitial anxiety while a ride is being a requested. Uber is a pioneer of the sharing economy and was one of the earliest examples of a digital experience that could not exist but for the advent of mobile technology. The exceptional usability of the app reflects the company’s deep roots in mobile.
