Stop marketing. Start mattering.
That was one of Mark’s standout points on the podcast — and it’s something many brands still miss.
"You've got to create something so interesting, so memorable, so worthy that customers can't wait to talk about you."
Traditional marketing focuses on pushing a message.
But today’s customers filter out noise faster than ever.

To win attention and trust, you need to create spaces where people feel seen, valued, and connected.
"Lean into the signals of where your customers' hearts and passions are. What are they thinking? What do they love? Where are they showing up? And then becoming part of that," Mark explains.
In fact, according to his insights in "Belonging to the Brand: Why Community is the Last Great Marketing Strategy," brand communities drive higher lifetime value, lower churn, and generate more word-of-mouth referrals than any ad campaign ever could.
Why Building a Community Beats Growing an Audience
Most companies stop at growing an audience. But audience size means nothing without engagement and emotional investment.
Mark says the smartest brands focus on fostering two-way conversations, shared values, and collective purpose:
"You've got to disrupt where you're telling the story. You've got to disrupt who's telling the story. You've got to do something different, something audacious to make people pay attention and earn that attention and eventually earn their trust."
Examples like LEGO’s fan communities, Harley-Davidson’s riders’ clubs, or even niche B2B forums show how powerful this can be when executed well.
Building belonging isn’t guesswork — it’s measurable.
Instead of vanity metrics like follower count or impressions, Mark says leaders should track:
- Net Promoter Score (NPS) tied to community involvement
- Customer retention and lifetime value for community members vs. non-members
- Organic referrals stemming from the community
"If someone is doing our marketing for us by talking about our products and our services, that is the purest, most trusted, most unadulterated type of marketing you can ever have."
How Brands Win with Real Relationships
While AI tools are transforming efficiency in marketing, Mark warns against automating where it matters most:
"We are always going to turn to a human for the truth. We need a human in this world of misinformation and deep fakes to help us navigate this world. And so if you are known in your industry, you're going to be okay."
Brands like Adobe, Yum! Brands, and Victoria’s Secret are winning in 2025 by using AI for insights while doubling down on personalized, human-driven engagement where it matters most.
