Despite significantly cuter filters (bring back the deer!) and a friendly, relaxed attitude, Snapchat seems to be slipping to Instagram Stories, who has been gunning for Snap Inc. ever since they burst onto the scene a little over one year ago.
Luckily, Snapchat isn't going down without a fight -- and what a battle they're brewing, too.
We've seen Snapchat's latest update, which puts the "social" back in media and creates an almost familial vibe to the network (something that Instagram can't seem to replicate). Now, hot on their own heels, Snapchat is introducing a new desktop app that allows anyone in the Snap community to create amazing AR graphic lenses for anyone to use: Lens Studio.
So how does it work?
Once you download the app to your computer (it's available on both Mac and Windows) simply design a 3D graphic in any program you prefer.
Then, upload said graphic to Lens Studio and design its movement or experience directly inside the program. Once you're finished, simply submit to Snapchat. As soon as the design is approved, you'll get a QR code that anyone can use within Snapchat's mobile app to "unlock" your AR animation.
Lens Studio opens the door to plenty of possibilities. Not only do designers and students have the ability to dabble in motion graphics on a larger scale, but brands can interact with their consumers in a more creative capacity. Since Snapchat doesn't (generally) have the ability to showcase money-driving content, nor can it link to any external website, building brands is its bread and butter. Anything the app can do to increase that ability is certainly in its favor.
What's better? The app is free! While in line with Snapchat as a platform, creating another high-tech free program is a bold move for the company, who is struggling despite recently going public.
