There are several different types of testing and rating systems for building materials but in the roofing industry you must have a UL label. When I was in college and installing roofs we would argue over who put on hoe many bundles of shingles. The UL stamp on each bundle was considered proof and we used the little stamps currency.The testing done by these engineers is the best in the world and saves many lives. Without their stamp of approval no roofing product is really marketable. It is almost as if a law were passed requiring UL approval on roofing products. "
