My Experience with SAR Professional Corporation: I hired SAR to manage my company's corporate taxes and had a one-hour introductory meeting to explore the possibility of working together. As part of the process, I signed a Letter of Engagement and paid an initial deposit of $1,000, which was stated to be non-refundable. After our meeting, I reached out with a bookkeeping question to prepare for the upcoming corporate tax work. To my surprise, I was told I would need to pay an additional $500 for a 30-minute Q&A session, which I didn’t need as I just had a clarification question related to the bookkeeping. This extra fee was unexpected, as I hadn’t been informed beforehand that asking for a question for clarification purposes would incur an additional cost. In my experience, it’s not common for accountants to charge for basic follow-up questions, especially before any substantial work has begun. A few months later, I had the opportunity to sell my business, and the buyer preferred to use their accountant for the corporate tax filing. Given that SAR had not yet filed any taxes, I requested a refund of the deposit $1,000. However, SAR declined, citing the non-refundable clause in the contract. They explained that the fee was justified by the time spent preparing the "Letter of Engagement" and the introductory meeting. While I understand the contractual terms, I felt that the $1,000 fee was disproportionate for what amounted to a standard letter and a meet-and-greet session, something that most accountants do without charging upfront.
