Having grown up across Singapore, Korea, Canada, and the United States, Kwon experienced a sense of displacement and of being an outsider between cultures, languages, and different versions of herself. These experiences inform her creative practice, particularly her exploration of identity, belonging, multicultural memory, and the feeling of being a misfit or outsider.

Rather than simply recreating childhood memories, Kwon uses her work to revisit and reinterpret those memories from her present perspective. Her creative practice embraces what she describes as the hidden or misfit child while exploring the curious, imaginative, and expressive spirit associated with childhood.
