- Project Brief: Design an education app that makes insect discovery and biodiversity data more accessible through intuitive navigation, interactive mapping, and clear information visualization.
Education app design for the natural world works best when it makes science feel like play. Khang Dang builds Wildtrace around that idea, turning insect discovery into a warm, collectible experience with a vintage-naturalist look.
The botanical aesthetic sets the mood from the first screen. Antique butterfly and moth illustrations, soft cream backgrounds, and a serif headline give the app a field-journal feel rather than a clinical database.
The home screen frames learning as a personal journey. A “Field Explorer” progress card, a nearby-species alert, and a “New in your dex” entry for the Lime Swallowtail turn observation into something you want to keep adding to.
The map screen makes dense data easy to read. A hex-based biodiversity heatmap with species pins and an ecosystem overview, backed by in-range and sighting counts, shows where to look next without drowning you in numbers.
The badge system rewards curiosity over completion. Milestones like “Thrill of Exploration” celebrate noticing a diverse range of species, so the app encourages you to pay attention to the living world instead of just racing to catch them all.
