- Project Brief: Create packaging design for AXE’s Y2K Reboot Collection that revives three retired scents through a nostalgic early-2000s visual identity.
Fashion and beauty packaging can trade on pure nostalgia when the scent inside is a reissue. AXE plays that card with its Y2K Reboot Collection, dressing three revived early-2000s fragrances in a full 8-bit, dead-technology throwback.
The matte-black can is the canvas, its glossy pixel graphics rendering the anarchy symbol, a lightning bolt, and a handheld game console in chunky low-res blocks. Zigzag halftone auras and acid green, hot pink, and electric blue against that black body pull the whole thing straight out of a 2002 arcade.
The voice sells the bit as hard as the art, wrapping the cylinder with "Y2K Reboot," "Press play on nostalgia," and a QR code labeled "Don't scan here." Even the curved body-wash bottle carries the treatment, so the reboot reads across both the spray can and the shower shelf.
The catch is legibility under all the noise, with pixel type and zigzag patterns crowding the scent names on the narrow can. It nails the retro hit on a shelf, though the busiest fronts make it hard to tell Kilo from Anarchy at a glance.
