Zipeng Zhu Holiday Card
Designer Zipeng Zhu created a holiday card for commissioning firm A to A studio solutions. The goal was to create a holiday card that A to A studio solutions could send to friends and clients and let their production prowess illuminate.
The company is a full-service graphic production studio, and Zipeng took full advantage of their equipment, including an eight-panel laser cutter.
Here is the remarkable thing: this entire card was made out of “X’s.” This was in part because the main concept behind the project was “XXXXXXXMAS.” There are seven custom-designed X’s: a message on the back of the card made of X’s, and an “X” envelope to seal the card with an “X” sticker. Phew. Talk about repetition.
Which brings me to this point: the best and most memorable designs (best print designs, too) include repetition. Repetition makes concepts and images and messages unforgettable.
Look at how awesome this card is. The X’s are stamped on white paper with red directly behind them reading “A2A XMAS.” On the left is a jaw-dropping complex cut-out design, which is all the layers of the card stacked together.
The cut-out design looks astonishing. Here we see an assembly line of X’MAS cards side by side on a large piece of paper ready to be cut.
Another view of the massive number of cards. Each card is absent of flaws. The laser cutter precision cut each x with pinpoint accuracy.
The foldout view of the card is striking. This is a card that folds out to eight custom-cut designs. Each side has an intricate pattern more complex than the one before it. The card is also not flimsy. It stands and is made of sturdy material to survive any trip to any residence.
Here we have the card folded into an envelope with the X seal. Zipeng Zhu’s design was so great it won best of the region for East in PRINT’s 2016 Regional Design Awards.
Zipeng took originality and repetition, two stand out attributes of best package design, to heights I did not know were possible. He simultaneously highlighted the design capabilities of A to A’s production facility. This isn’t just a holiday card -- it is a masterful exhibit of someone at the pinnacle of design knowledge.
There could not be a greater card to send to A to A’s clients and friends to celebrate the holiday. This card would have left a smile on all of their faces. If not, they would at the very least be impressed beyond belief. The best print designs leave lasting impressions on all who view it.
This is an example that will help you in your journey of design inspiration. Zipeng did not just raise the bar, he catapulted it to levels requiring a telescope to see. He took a huge risk. A gamble. And he attacked his goal with ferocity. I commend him and congratulate him for accomplishing this feat, and we are all grateful to witness a new level of creative possibility with Christmas cards.
