- Project Brief: Create a promotional animated film that combines football excitement, comedy, and character-driven storytelling ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The best animation commercials work when the casting makes sense on its own terms. Putting Mbappé on a Minions team actually does, because he is already a cartoon of speed and celebration on a real pitch.
Illumination times the release of "Minions & Monsters" to land exactly when the World Cup opens in North America. The teaser is not interrupting that attention but riding it.
The Minions play it straight, needing a striker and calling one without acknowledging the absurdity. Mbappé doing his arm-cross celebration surrounded by two-foot-tall teammates in matching kits is funny precisely because nobody treats it as unusual.
The monster team is the detail that makes this work as an animation showcase rather than just a celebrity cameo. A pink tentacled creature crouching over a football in a packed stadium is a harder problem to solve than Mbappé walking onto a pitch, and the fact that it lands in seconds is what separates Illumination from a standard promotional tie-in.
