- Project Brief: Create an entertainment teaser for You Can See Everything that builds suspense through minimalist editing, direct-to-camera imagery, restrained sound design, and a self-reflexive cinematic style.
An documentary teaser can unsettle you before it explains a thing when it holds a gaze a beat too long. A24’s You Can See Everything, a meta-documentary from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, sells its premise through stillness and silence.
Tight close-ups frame the subject’s wide eyes and fixed smile, with direct eye contact and long pauses taking the place of narration. Background noise and music drop out in key moments, so every glance carries more weight than any line of dialogue.
Behind-the-scenes moments stay in the cut, like a director leaning in with headphones around his neck and an offhand “Good shot.” Those slips break the fourth wall, so the act of filming becomes as much a part of the entertainment as the subject herself.
Wide shots place the pair on a gray sectional in a wood-paneled living room, with low amber sun cutting across the space and a baby asleep in a bouncer nearby. Sparse musical cues land at only a few points in the teaser, so the quiet domestic scene feels strangely tense.
