The deliverable is a set of finalized page designs, typically produced as high-fidelity mockups in a tool like Figma before any code is written.
Standard inclusions are desktop and mobile designs for all primary page types; custom illustrations or photography are not included unless explicitly scoped.
UX design
UX design is the process of mapping how a user moves through your site to complete a goal, such as finding information, making a purchase, or submitting an inquiry. The deliverables are a structured sitemap, user flow diagrams, and wireframes that define page structure before visual design begins.
Most web design companies include basic UX as part of a standard engagement; deep UX research, including user interviews and usability testing, is a separate, larger-scale effort.
Responsive design
Responsive design ensures your website functions correctly across all screen sizes, including desktop, tablet, and mobile. This is a standard deliverable; any web design company that doesn't include mobile as part of the base scope should be asked directly why. The output is designs and, in most cases, front-end code that automatically adapts to the browser's viewport.
Front-end development
Most web design companies also build what they design, translating mockups into working HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The deliverable is a functional, coded website.
What counts as "included" varies significantly: some agencies deliver a fully custom codebase; others build on platforms like WordPress, Webflow, or Shopify using existing themes and templates. Clarify which approach is being quoted before signing.
CMS integration and setup
A content management system (CMS) is the back-end tool that lets you update your website without writing code. Most web design companies integrate a CMS, usually WordPress, Webflow, or a headless option (a backend-only CMS that manages content without a built-in front end, delivering data via APIs to a custom interface), into a standard build.
What's typically included is set up and basic configuration; custom plugins, e-commerce integrations, or multi-user workflows are usually priced separately.
What additional services can a web design company provide?
Web design companies may offer extras like basic SEO setup, copywriting, branding, and ongoing maintenance. These are not standard. Most are add-ons or handled by specialists, so they need to be defined and priced separately.
SEO setup
Some web design companies include foundational on-page SEO as part of a standard build. Ongoing SEO strategy, content optimization, and link building are separate disciplines handled by SEO specialists, not web design companies by default. If SEO is a priority, confirm exactly what is and isn't included in the proposal.
Copywriting and content creation
Web design companies design around content; they don't usually produce it. Some agencies partner with copywriters or offer copywriting as a paid add-on; most expect the client to supply text before or during the design phase. Supplying finished copy on time is one of the most common causes of project delays.
Brand identity design
Web design companies that have in-house branding capabilities sometimes offer logo design, color palette development, and brand guidelines, but this is not universal. If you need a brand identity created from scratch, confirm whether the agency you're considering handles this or whether you should engage a dedicated branding agency first.
Ongoing maintenance
After launch, your site will need updates, security patches, and periodic improvements. Many web design companies offer monthly maintenance retainers, but these are discretionary contracts, not automatically included in a project build fee.
What does a web design company NOT do?
A web design company is responsible for how a website looks, feels, and functions at the interface level. It is not responsible for traffic generation, business strategy, or complex software architecture unless those web design services are explicitly scoped.
The following services typically fall outside a standard web design scope:
- Ongoing SEO and traffic growth: Technical optimization, content production, link building, and long-term search strategy require dedicated SEO expertise. Design teams may implement basic on-page elements, but they do not run ongoing search campaigns.
- Paid acquisition and campaign management: Growth channels like paid ads and campaign optimization require marketing ownership. Designers support landing pages, but they do not manage acquisition programs.
- Messaging and content strategy: Positioning, product copy, and customer research must be defined before design unless explicitly included. Design executes on a strategy; it does not create it.
- Complex back-end systems: Databases, authentication, payment logic, and large-scale integrations fall under software engineering. These require developers, not a design-focused studio.
How to match an agency's services to your needs
Before briefing any agency, answer these four questions honestly:
- Do you already have a brand identity, including logo, colors, and typography, or does that need to be created first? Starting web design without a settled brand leads to expensive rework.
- Who will supply the copy and images for your site, and by when? If you don't have an answer, factor in the time and cost of producing that content before the project starts.
- Will you need to update the site yourself after launch, or will someone else manage it? The answer determines which CMS and training requirements are in scope.
- What does success look like 12 months after launch? A site built to generate leads needs different features than one built to present a portfolio. Knowing this upfront helps focus the brief.
