Team Behind the Design
  • Agency: Mari Hosho

  • Project Brief: Design a mobile app that helps users find thoughtful gifts by translating personal preferences and intent into curated recommendations.

Great Android & iOS app design often succeeds by reducing emotional friction before it tackles functional complexity.

In reviewing gift recommendation apps, I focus on how clearly the interface guides decision-making without overwhelming the user.

The Giftique app UI works well because it frames gift selection as a calm, step-by-step conversation rather than a search task.

  • Onboarding & Flow: I like that the onboarding starts with a short questionnaire about who the gift is for and what they care about. That sequence mirrors how people think in real life and helps the experience feel personal from the first interaction.

  • Visual Tone: A soft, neutral palette keeps the interface calm and approachable. By leaning on spacing and gentle contrast instead of strong color, the UI stays focused on content rather than interface mechanics.

  • Interaction Design: Card-based product layouts feel familiar and low-pressure. Clear actions like saving or viewing details support exploration without pushing users toward quick decisions.

  • Flexibility & Control: Being able to revisit and adjust preferences makes the experience feel responsive. I appreciate how the filters stay lightweight, allowing tastes to evolve without resetting the entire flow.

  • Typography & Readability: Clean sans-serif type paired with generous spacing keeps information easy to absorb. That clarity goes a long way in building trust, especially when recommendations feel personal.

What Brands and Agencies Can Learn from Giftique

1. Start With Intent, Not Inventory

Framing experiences around emotion and purpose before presenting options can reduce decision fatigue and increase confidence in recommendations.

2. Use Visual Restraint to Support Thoughtful Choices

Calm palettes and clear spacing help users stay focused, especially in exploratory or emotionally driven tasks like gifting.

3. Design for Iteration, Not Perfection

Giving users room to adjust preferences mid-flow makes the experience feel more flexible and human.
