Team Behind the Design

Client: Sommarøy Spirits
Category: Packaging - Food & Beverage
Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States
Project Brief: Design packaging for a category-defining line of lower-proof spirits that communicates moderation, quality, and longevity while standing out in a crowded beverage market.

Packaging Design Analysis

Great food and beverage packaging often succeeds by doing less — letting structure, material, and proportion carry the experience.

The Sommarøy Spirits packaging follows this approach, using restraint and clarity to position the brand as confident, composed, and built for longevity.

  • Structure: The layered label geometry relies on soft symmetry and curved forms to create depth without visual noise. I like how the shapes guide attention inward, keeping the focus on the brand name and proof details while maintaining a sense of balance.
  • Shelf Impact: Muted, nature-inspired color accents create calm separation across the range. From my perspective, this restraint helps the bottles stand out precisely because they avoid the louder cues typical of spirits packaging.
  • Information Hierarchy: The typographic system is disciplined and easy to scan. Larger serif letterforms establish brand presence, while smaller supporting text keeps key details clear. This clarity makes the product feel transparent and trustworthy at first glance.
  • Craft & Detail: The patterned neck sleeve and metallic cap add a tactile layer to the experience. I appreciate how these details reward closer inspection without competing with the main label, reinforcing a sense of thoughtful craftsmanship.

1. Let Restraint Do the Heavy Lifting

Calm palettes and controlled geometry can create stronger shelf presence than visual excess, especially in saturated categories.
