- Project Brief: Craft a video that tells a beauty brand story through cinematic visuals and fast-paced editing.
A commercial for a beauty brand must make texture the hero. Alex André’s spec spot for GRN gets close enough to see texture on the skin and pigment on the lid, then cuts before the viewer has time to look away.
The production shot on the Fujifilm Eterna 55 in Medium Format 8K, and the format choice shows. At that resolution, skin reads as skin, not as a retouched surface. The camera holds detail in pores, in powder texture, in the way pigment sits differently on different faces. For a beauty spot, that honesty is riskier than smoothing everything out, and it pays off.
The edit drives everything. Fast cuts cycle through looks at a pace that treats each application as a single beat rather than a scene. Bold lip colors, metallic eye finishes, and bare-skin moments rotate in rapid sequence. The speed shows the product range and keeps the energy high enough to hold a scroll.
The lighting stays soft and warm throughout. No hard shadows, no overhead studio glare. The faces read as lit from the front and slightly below, which flatters the skin and keeps the makeup visible without flattening the texture underneath. For a beauty spot, that balance between showing the product and showing the person wearing it is the harder problem to solve.
The studio backdrop strips out everything that isn't the face. No set, no props, no lifestyle context. The color grade leans warm, pushing skin tones toward golden and amber. Against that neutral background, the makeup colors do the visual work that a set would normally handle.
Alex André built a beauty reel that moves fast enough to feel current and shoots close enough to prove the product works. For a spec spot, the restraint is the point. Just faces and makeup, lit well and cut tight.
