As Anthony Bourdain's partners, we were approached by CNN to create an immersive digital site that would provide a beautiful home for each destination covered by Bourdain's show Parts Unknown. But also because the site was meant to live up to the beauty and aesthetic of the television program. And it needed to be done in a way that satisfied both our mainstream luxury advertisers (like LandRover, ANA, and more) but also the famously high standards of Bourdain himself. ANML engaged in this 18-month design and build process with outstanding workmanship and creative decision-making. They navigated wildly different and demanding stakeholders. And in the end they built a site that still looks fresh even nearly a decade later. If you want to make lasting work, there is no one else I could recommend more.

ELEK+RIK has worked on improving our React Native mobile app. We had the skeleton of an app, but they were able to do an end-to-end re-design of each of the main pages. Since then, they`ve successfully implemented around ~20 different features on our mobile app. We share a spec and design, they provide an estimate and occasionally some design options, then when completed create a PR on GitHub. Their code is well-organized, easy to follow, and rarely do we have to go back-and-forth about bugs. They are also excellent communicators - carefully following threads on Slack, effectively communicating design and engineering tradeoffs, and even producing a 10m Loom video walking through a diagram. Their communication is top-notch. They are super easy to work with even though we are on very different time zones. And, I am impressed at the speed and execution of their development.

I've never looked as forward to writing a review as I am now.The Bonsai designer I had the privilege of working with (EF) was *extraordinary* on several fronts. First, top shelf design chops. But, honestly, this isn't uncommon, plenty of killer designers out there. What *is* uncommon is that this same designer also brought a sharp business sensibility to the table, and struck the perfect balance of (a) seeking direction from me (the client) but also (b) presenting his own bold, assertive vision. I'll say it again, finding that combo is incredibly rare. Working with this particular individual was pure, uncut 'joy.' Enough to make me want to find new ways to deepen an existing engagement, or find new ways to engage. (Which I did, and have done, since.)The real measure of a company isn't necessarily how wonderful things are when everything runs smoothly, but what happens when you experience a wobble or two that are inevitable in a complex, lengthy engagement. How does the firm respond? For context, we'd been working on multiple websites, and multiple initiatives simultaneously. This is where I cannot say enough about their CEO Jason LaBaw. Jason's sincerity, and desire to meet a certain standard was so clear, and compelling, it spoke loudly about what he values as an owner, and as a human, and what he expects of his entire team on both fronts. It is not surprising to see how committed everyone is to meeting that standard, out of a shared desire to deliver excellence.That's the firm you want as your partner.Bonsai is on the cutting edge of all things digital marketing. Bonsai continues to deepen its bench with top-shelf talent. (I know their team's evolution because I've been engaged with them for multiple years, and just re-engaged again for more...) Bonsai is the team we're looking to be hitched to, possibly forever, because they walk the talk behind 'wanting to behave like a partner.' How easy is it to say those words at the outset, but how many firms actually live up to it. (With the exception of Bonsai, none, in my experience.)Bonsai goes the distance. My experience with SoftDoes has been extremely disappointing. Their communication is terrible, the people I dealt with were highly unprofessional, and their pricing is absolutely outrageous compared to the value of the work being delivered.One of my biggest concerns is the company’s lack of transparency. From what I’ve observed, their development work appears to be outsourced to people in Ukraine through another company called Come Back Agency. Even when I searched for SoftDoes online, its website appeared to redirect to Come Back Agency.Take a look at their LinkedIn yourself. They present themselves as a Kansas City-based company, yet I couldn’t find a single employee listed as being based in Kansas City. That raises serious questions about their business structure, where their team actually operates, and who you’re really paying to develop your software.My interactions with the CEO, Orest, were particularly unpleasant. I found him extremely arrogant, dismissive, and condescending. He speaks to customers as though they’re beneath him. Rather than addressing legitimate concerns professionally, his attitude made an already frustrating experience even worse.Their Google reviews also raised serious red flags for me. Several reviewer profiles appeared to have AI-generated profile pictures, and the reviews themselves read as though they were written by ChatGPT rather than genuine customers. Many of these accounts had only ever reviewed SoftDoes.After I confronted them about these concerns, I noticed that some profile pictures had been changed to what appeared to be stock images, and the accounts had gained an additional review of random places. I cannot independently verify who operates these accounts, but the timing and patterns made me seriously question the authenticity of their online reputation.Nothing about my experience with SoftDoes has inspired trust. If you’re looking for custom software development, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. Verify who you’re actually doing business with, who will be developing your software, and what you’re paying for.

We initially engaged Digital Insides to get to a particular milestone when we were only about three weeks away from a deadline. They helped us create specific components in the project; we worked on a few while they also worked on critical elements of the site: a blog, a media gallery, a library, and an audio podcast module. Those components were in a particular section of the site; they were utterly siloed in that section. Digital Insides also had to create the APIs to talk to the WordPress backend. Overall, setting up the web was the main scope of work.Digital Insides created their development environment and developed all the components. Once they tested everything, they sent us the code. We already had the design layouts for them, so they didnt have to worry about it. However, we didnt have a mobile layout, so Digital Insides worked on that themselves and adapted it to the rest of the site.
