  • Project Brief: Redesign Kneads Bakeshop’s hospitality website with premium food photography, intuitive navigation, responsive layouts, and community-focused storytelling.

A hospitality website for a bakery usually stops at a menu and a map, a grid of pastries with hours underneath. Design In DC built Kneads as a lifestyle brand instead and leaned on story, classes, and events to make a bakeshop read like a destination.

The homepage opens on a full-bleed video of the bakery floor. A baker pulls racks of bread behind an editorial serif wordmark and an Order Now button, so the craft sells the place before a single product appears.

The story section leads with the H&S Bakery lineage behind the brand. Kneads ties itself to a Baltimore baking family running since 1943, so a first-time visitor gets a reason to care before the menu asks for anything.

The menu arrives as a magazine-style food mosaic. Avocado toast, a smoked salmon bagel, and the JP Mac burger sit in mixed-size frames with plated photography, so the food reads as editorial rather than a price list.

Classes get headline billing next to the food. Croissant, sourdough, and cinnamon roll workshops turn the bakery into somewhere you do something, which gives a visitor a reason to return that a menu alone cannot.

Events run on a date-tabbed calendar. Coffeehouse Sessions pair Aveley coffee with live local music across a row of upcoming dates, so the site reads as a venue with a schedule, not a shop with hours.

Wholesale gets its own how-it-works path. Two plain steps, explore the catalog and place a daily or weekly order, speak to cafes and hotels, so a B2B buyer finds a lane apart from the walk-in crowd.

The locations page splits into a flagship and its satellites. Harbor East leads with photos, hours, and address, then Canton, Cross Keys, and a coming-soon Chevy Chase follow, so a customer places each shop without a map hunt.

A Stay Connected block pulls in a live social feed as proof. Instagram posts carry their like and comment counts, so community activity does the vouching that a testimonial quote would handle elsewhere.

Conversion runs on an Order Now button that never leaves the header. Newsletter signup, catering, and class booking give slower visitors a next step, so the site earns something from a browser at any stage.

The palette holds warm cream and brown under an editorial serif. Soft neutrals and rich food photography read premium and inviting at once, so the design feels like a boutique café rather than a chain.

The real achievement is that it does not look like a bakery site. Kneads reads as a hospitality brand built around bread, which is what turns a local bakeshop into a place people plan a visit around.
