Video streaming platform Netflix is pushing its gaming efforts by testing games on all devices "where its members enjoy Netflix — TVs, computers, and mobile."
Starting today, the streaming giant will be rolling out a limited beta test to select Netflix users in Canada and the United Kingdom to test the company's game streaming technology and controller, as well as make improvements to its user experience.
For now, selected users can play the games on TV devices, namely:
- Amazon Fire TV streaming media players
- Chromecast with Google TV
- LG TVs
- Nvidia Shield TV
- Roku devices and TVs
- Samsung Smart TVs
- Walmart ONN
"To play our games on TV, we're introducing a controller that we already have in our hands most of the day — our phones. Members on PCs and Macs can play on netflix.com with a keyboard and mouse," Netflix VP of Games Mike Verdu wrote in a blog post on Monday.
Testing on PCs and Macs via netflix.com will start in the coming weeks.
Additionally, Netflix shared two games that will be part of its initial test: Night School Studio's supernatural thriller Oxenfree, and the gem-mining arcade game Molehew's Mining Adventure.
The History of Netflix Gaming
The streaming service's gaming efforts started in November 2021, when it rolled out Netflix Gaming as a dedicated tab on its iOS and Android apps.
Along with the launch, the company introduced five new games playable straight from the Netflix mobile app: Stranger Things: 1984, Stranger Things 3: The Game, Teeter Up, Card Blast, and Shooting Hoops.
With the latest beta testing, Netflix explores its possibilities with cloud streaming, allowing users to enjoy games wherever Netflix is available to them.
"By making games available on more devices, we hope to make games even easier to play for our members around the world. While we’re still very early in our gaming journey, we’re excited to bring joy to members with games," Verdu shared.
