Ad blockers operating on Chromium OS, such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, may soon be eliminated. DesignRush shares this latest update in their Spotlight news feature.

MIAMI - OCTOBER 20, 2022

Ad blockers that run on the Chromium operating system (OS), like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, may soon be out of business.

DesignRush, a B2B marketplace connecting businesses with agencies, explained how ad blockers work and how their elimination may affect users and developers.

In an effort to improve cybersecurity, Google will change Manifest V2 to Manifest V3 application programming interfaces (APIs) which ad blockers use to tell browsers which files the extension uses.

At the beginning of 2023, the leading search engine will turn off Manifest V2 extensions in some channels like Canary and Beta and will then remove the extensions from all other channels in June.

By 2024, there will be no more V2 extensions left, resulting to ad blockers losing about 90% of their overall efficiency.
