Whether it’s a playful treat, a luxurious prezzie, or even a romantic gift, finding something your valentine will love is just part of the battle. Often, it's the packaging that makes a gift stand out so much more than any other box or bag.
If you’re buying something from a high-end store or designer brand you’ll probably expect to receive some nice packaging anyhow. However, more and more brands are using their packaging as a means of promoting other products or their actual company.
After the buzz of Christmas and New Year, Valentine’s is the next opportunity for brands to start cranking up the marketing machine, and these 10 examples of Valentine’s Day package design are proof that there’s more to packaging then ribbons and colorful wrapping paper.

1. The Best Illustrated Valentine's Day Package Design: Zaxy
Zaxy used their packaging for flip-flops to transform Valentine’s themed footwear into a full experience. The packaging makes use of the ‘his and hers’ strategy to create a visual story that matches the flip-flops you’ve purchased.
The bright colors grab the attention of the eye, and the sharp, clean-cut designs which sit behind the illustrations make for a compelling package design.
2. The Pastel Valentine's Day Package Design: Love Brew Beer
The “Love Brew Beer” campaign was put together as part of a personal project by designer Staci Carpenter. The project was a compilation of beer labels, each with their own designs, to describe the types of craft beer contained in the bottles.
The use of pale or faded tones on top of the dark bottles of beer is effective - it seems to add an artisan feel to the design and beer and acts as a distinctly different design to what you’d normally associate with beer bottles, usually bright, bold colors.
3. The Top Partnership Valentine's Day Package Design: Disaronno
Disaronno, the popular Italian liqueur company, collaborated with the Italian fashion house Moschino to create a limited edition bottle, perfect for a loved one who loves the drink or brand.
The actual bottle was designed in Moschino’s signature style, and with a classic heart pattern in a bold black and red color palette. The iconic squared bottle top adds the unmistakable shape of a Disaronno bottle -- important for consumer association and recognition. It also comes in a limited edition box, styled with the same design in mind.
4. The Crafty Valentine's Day Package Design: DIY Valentine’s Gifts
Designed by Anna Trympali, the main aim of the project was to piece together the required items to help someone create their own Valentine’s gift box. It’s a handy idea, particularly for those of us aren’t exactly the most design-minded.
The box included:
- Cards with the letters of your loved ones.
- Four different double-sided note cards.
- Two triptychs (mirror words and low opacity letters).
- An origami.
5. The Top Themed Valentine's Day Package Design: H&M
These Valentine’s Day themed bags were designed for Swedish clothing giant H&M by BVD. They epitomize the light-hearted, cheap-chic branding that H&M thrives on, and they add a subtle yet caring effect to any gift purchased from the store during the Valentine season.
The bold, capitalized typography distinctly sits out from the golden background with the red hearts acting as the picture visual association at the time of year.
6. The Punny Valentine's Day Package Design: Mr. Kipling
Design agency BrandOpus helped Mr. Kipling release a seasonal range of packaging for Valentine’s Day celebrations with the much-loved cakes.
The limited-edition packaging comprises of quirky messages that evoke the spirit of Valentine’s Day by delivering a humorous, fuzzy feeling associated with special messages from your Valentine. The packaging uses several plays on words for the messages, for example, “Fancy a kiss with a French Fancy” or “Love you Cherry much.”
7. The Classic Valentine's Day Package Design: Hershey’s
The popular chocolate company, Hershey’s, took love to a whole new level with this 3-pound heart-shaped bar of chocolate. The packaging alone oozes the stereotypical colors and designs associated with Valentine’s Day -- the love hearts, and both light and dark pinks.
8. The Celebratory Package Design: Moët Champagne
Love was truly in the air in 2017 when Moët released their Valentine’s Day champagne range. They promoted their signature Rosé Imperial in a unique Emoji-themed bottle, coupled with a striking gift box.
The special release featured fun and flirtatious animated stickers that you could apply to your loved one’s bottle of champagne. What’s more, you could actually download the Valentine-themed emojis on your mobile phone and then use them when you’re messaging your partner.
9. The Delicious Valentine's Day Package Design: Martha Stewart
Over at Martha Stewart, you can get some adorable gift boxes and packaging design ideas for the gift that you buy your loved one. For example, these Valentine's Day Treat Cups are a nice way to gift delicious candies that you’ve bought.
These miniature gift bags are another example of a loving way to tuck away treats you’ve bought. The brightly patterned sacks and ribbon add a creative touch that your partner is sure to enjoy.
10. The Unexpected Valentine's Day Package Design: Marmite
The Unilever-owned savory spread tweaked their 2017 Valentine’s campaign to play on the famous love/hate brand positioning -- with added emphasis on "love.”
If you’re a Marmite fan you’ll be glad to hear that you can personalize a 250g jar of Marmite with the name of your Valentine. You’ll then be able to select from one of two lines to add to the jar: Either "Love me or hate me, I’m yours" or "Will you be my Valentine?"
The jars use a red label decorated with hearts and show two cupids flying around the iconic Marmite pot., ensuring this niche market finds maximum romance.
Each of these package designs capitalizes on a somewhat "Hallmark" holiday without sacrificing their brand identity. Through unique color palettes, playful design elements and steadfast loyalty to the company brand book, each design speaks to consumers' hearts and wallets -- which, as we all know, is the end goal.
