Former employee- the beginning working relationships appears to be promising but what I learned was that their vendors were not prepared to provide onboarding credentials and training. Not to mention the company is very limited on company communication. It literally took 2-4 weeks for me to receive proper training and credentials. Not to mention the two vendors I was assigned being able to maintain employability of contract for a year. In the 2.5 years I was there I’ve been laid off twice and upon my 3rd assignment I had to take a pay cut. I decided to part ways and upon my existing they decided to switch my final check to paper instead of an electronic deposit without telling me. When I called / email the company to learn what had happen; I had to repeat my calls with no response back from them. When I finally spoke with HR I was I informed they need to ensure the return of company equipment. I was totally surprise, because no communication was conveyed to me, that they holding my payCheck. I’ve always been a loyal employee even with the 2 lay-offs, and decrease in pay. I never thought they would be ornery and be spiteful towards the end when they had me waiting on them for my return label to return the company equipment. I sent it back soon as I got the label, yet I am still waiting on my final paycheck which they have fail to confirm is in the mail. Not a bad company to work for, but strongly ask the top questions surrounded around sustainability, pay increases and employment, annual reviews, their vendors, process, and training, and the length of their vendors contracts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a managed IT service provider, and how does it differ from traditional IT support?

It is a company that takes over the responsibility of running and maintaining a business’s IT systems. Instead of hiring a full in-house team, companies outsource network monitoring, technical issue resolution, and data security to a managed services provider (MSP).

In the United States, the managed services market is projected to reach over $119 billion by 2031, driven largely by demand for cloud, security, and compliance expertise.

The key difference between managed service providers and traditional IT support comes down to approach, scope, and value:

CategoryTraditional IT support (Break-Fix) Managed IT Service Provider
ApproachReactive: Issues are addressed only after they occur Proactive: Continuous monitoring prevents issues before impact
Scope of servicesLimited: Focused on isolated tasks like troubleshooting or hardware fixes Comprehensive: Covers cloud computing, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and more
Engagement modelTransactional: Engaged only when problems arise Ongoing partnership: Aligned with long-term performance and digital transformation goals
Cost structureUnpredictable: Variable costs based on incidents and repairs Predictable: Fixed monthly pricing for consistent budgeting

Which services do IT managed services companies offer?

They deliver a broad range of managed IT services to keep systems running efficiently, securely, and in alignment with business goals. Rather than offering one-off fixes, these providers deliver comprehensive IT solutions that combine support, strategy, and ongoing optimization.

  • 24/7 system monitoring and maintenance: Continuous oversight of systems to detect, prevent, and resolve issues before they disrupt business operations.
  • Help desk and end-user support services: On-demand technical assistance for employees to resolve IT issues quickly and keep productivity high.
  • Server, network, and device management: Ongoing management of core infrastructure to ensure performance, connectivity, and reliability across all systems.
  • Security patching and software updates: Regular updates to fix vulnerabilities, improve performance, and protect systems from emerging cyber threats.
  • IT infrastructure planning and optimization: Strategic design and ongoing improvement of IT environments to support scalability, efficiency, and business growth.
  • Cybersecurity and data protection: Advanced services and threat monitoring, email security to prevent phishing and ransomware attacks, network security and endpoint protection, and data protection, backup, and compliance support.
  • Data backup and disaster recovery: Managed IT services providers help organizations prepare for and recover from disruptions by handling backup management and secure data storage, disaster recovery planning and testing, and rapid system restoration after outages or cyber incidents.
  • Cloud hosting and management, including cloud migration from on-premises systems to platforms like Google Cloud, ongoing management of cloud services and hybrid environments, and the design of scalable cloud solutions for performance and cost efficiency.

When should a company switch from break-fix IT support to a managed solution?

It should switch when reactive IT support is no longer enough to keep systems secure, reliable, and cost-effective. If your business is growing, adopting cloud services, or facing increasing security risks, managed IT services offer a more proactive and scalable approach.

Key signs it’s time to switch:

  • Frequent downtime or recurring IT issues: If problems keep happening, a managed IT service can proactively monitor and maintain systems to prevent disruptions.
  • Unpredictable IT costs: Break-fix support leads to unexpected expenses, while managed services provide predictable monthly pricing.
  • Rising threats: Without strong cybersecurity services, your business is at risk
  • Moving to the cloud or scaling operations: Managed IT service providers can support cloud migration, manage cloud providers, and deliver scalable cloud solutions.
  • Limited internal IT resources: If your team is stretched thin, these providers offer expert support services without the need for in-house hiring.
  • Need for a long-term IT strategy: A managed solution helps align information technology with business goals, supporting digital transformation and growth.
  • Operating in competitive markets: Businesses across the United States, including New York, New Jersey, and Los Angeles, require reliable technology solutions to stay competitive.

How much do managed IT services cost?

Managed IT services typically cost between $80 and $200 per user per month, though exact pricing depends on your business size, the number of devices, and the range of services included.

IT managed services companies also offer the following pricing models:

  • Per device: $50-$150 per device/month
  • Flat rate: $3,000-$10,000+ per month for full support
  • Tiered plans: Price varies by service level
  • À la carte: Flexible, starting at a few hundred dollars/month

What industries benefit most from managed IT services?

Any business that needs reliable IT support, predictable costs, and strong data protection can benefit from managed IT services.

For example:

  • Small to mid-sized companies that don’t have full in-house IT teams
  • Healthcare providers who must protect sensitive patient data
  • Financial and legal firms that need strict compliance and security
  • Fast-growing startups that need scalable IT support
  • Retail and eCommerce companies that run online sales platforms
  • Manufacturers that rely on connected systems and automation

What should you look for when choosing a managed IT services company?

You should focus on a few key factors that determine reliability, security, and long-term value, including:

  • Experience and proven results: Look for managed IT service providers with a strong track record, supported by real client outcomes or a relevant case study.
  • Range of managed IT services: It should offer comprehensive IT solutions, so you don’t need multiple service providers.
  • Customized approach: It should offer tailored solutions that align with your business goals, infrastructure, and growth plans.
  • Transparent pricing: Choose a provider with clear, predictable pricing for managed services, avoiding hidden fees or unexpected costs.
  • Cloud expertise: Strong managed service providers should support cloud migration, manage cloud providers like Google Cloud, and deliver scalable cloud solutions.
  • Service level agreements (SLAs): Defined response times and performance guarantees ensure consistent, reliable support services.
  • Scalability: Your managed solution should grow with your business, supporting expansion, new technologies, and digital transformation.
  • Reputation and credibility: Established managed IT services companies demonstrate reliability through client successes and industry presence.
  • Strategic partnership mindset: A strong MSP acts as a long-term partner, helping guide technology decisions and optimize your information technology environment.
