SEO vs PPC: Which Is right for your business?

CostPaid per click; each click costsHigh effort, "Free" clicks
TrustModerate (some users skip ads)High (users trust organic more)

In 2026, the debate isn't about which is better, but which is faster. With AI Overviews (AIO) now dominating the top of search results, both Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay Per Click (PPC) have had to change.

The short answer: PPC brings fast results; SEO builds momentum over time

Use SEO when you want long-term, compounding traffic and can afford to wait for results. Use PPC when you need immediate visibility, fast testing, or predictable demand on a controlled budget.

For best results, combine both methods.

What is the best PPC platform for my business?

If your goal is...Use this platform
Immediate sales or leadsGoogle Ads (Search)
Building a brand/lifestyleMeta (Instagram) or TikTok
Selling to other businessesLinkedIn Ads
Selling products on a budgetAmazon Ads or Microsoft Ads
Targeting Gen Z or trendsTikTok Ads

The best platform depends entirely on your business model and where your customers spend the most time. Since the rise of AI-integrated search, PPC has split into two worlds: intent-based (people looking for you) and interruption-based (you looking for them).

Best for most businesses:

  • Google Ads: Ideal for high-intent traffic. If someone types "emergency plumber Cheney" or "best CRM for startups," they want to buy now.
  • Meta Ads (Facebook & Instagram): Best for visual products and impulse buys. If your product looks great in a video or photo, Meta's algorithm is elite at finding people who didn't know they wanted your product until they saw it.

The specialist platforms:

  • LinkedIn Ads: The gold standard for B2B. It is expensive (high CPC), but your B2B PPC agency can target by specific job titles (e.g., Director of Logistics) or company size.
  • Amazon Ads: A must for physical product sellers. It often has a higher conversion rate than Google because users are already in shopping mode.
  • TikTok Ads: In 2026, TikTok is a massive search engine for Gen Z and Millennials.

Alternatives:

  • Microsoft advertising (Bing): Often overlooked, but it reaches a more affluent and older demographic (usually 45+). Competition is lower, so your cost-per-click (CPC) is often 30% cheaper than Google.
  • Reddit & Quora: Best for niche, high-trust communities. If your audience is highly technical or research-heavy, appearing in these threads can feel more like a recommendation than an ad.

How much does PPC agency management cost?

Your total PPC cost is ad spend plus management fees. Industry competition determines how high both numbers go.

Average costs for a standard PPC campaign are:

  • Ad spend: $500 to $20,000+ per month
  • Cost-per-click (CPC): Approximately $1.62 per click
  • Cost-per-1,000 impressions (CPM): Approximately $3.12
  • Remarketing CPC: $0.66 to $1.23 per click
  • Tools and software: $15 to $800 per month

Agencies usually charge using one of these models:

  • Percentage of ad spend: 12% to 30% of monthly spend
  • Flat monthly fee: $1,000 to $3,000 for small to mid-sized businesses
  • Project-based pricing: $1,000 to $10,000+ for audits, setup, or short engagements

Average CPC in 2026 across major industries:

IndustryAverage CPCAverage CTR
Business Services$5.375.62%
Health & Fitness$4.716.88%
Education$4.396.21%
Animals & Pets$3.907.39%
Beauty & Personal Care$3.566.75%
Fashion & Jewelry$3.396.13%
Real Estate$2.109.20%
Restaurants & Food$2.188.68%

How long does it take to see the results of a PPC campaign?

You will see traffic in 24 hours, data in 2 weeks, and true profitability in about 3 months

PPC delivers results faster than SEO, but it's not instant. While your ads can appear within hours, profitable, stable results generally follow a three-stage timeline.

  • Days 1 to 7: Ads go live and gain immediate traffic. The platform's AI tests audiences. Avoid changing settings, or you will reset the learning process.
  • Weeks 2 to 4: You spot winning ads, block wasted search terms, and see early leads or sales. Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) may be high because you’re buying data to see which ads convert.
  • Months 2 to 3: You have enough data to cut underperforming keywords and double down on profitable ones. Results stabilize, and you hit your target return on ad spend (ROAS).

Who owns your ad accounts?

You should, but you might not. The legal and technical ownership of an ad account depends entirely on how it was set up and what is in your contract.

If you set up the account using your business email and your credit card, you own it. You simply invite a PPC agency as a partner or manager. If you choose to finish the partnership, you maintain full control and can remove their access at any time. You keep all the historical data, the winning ad formulas, and the tracking pixels that have learned who your customers are.

When a PPC agency manages campaigns under its own account, you don't retain ownership. If you part ways, you could lose valuable campaign data and have to start from scratch.
