- Project Brief: Design an e-commerce and retail app that helps users recognize manipulative fashion practices through accessible education, interactive content, and practical resources.
An e-commerce app almost always exists to sell you something faster. Pattern Breaking, from Driftime, flips the app format itself into an exhibit, rebuilding a familiar shopping interface so its own screens expose the manipulative tricks fast-fashion apps run.
The UI turns its dark patterns into labeled specimens. Fake urgency timers, "only 5 left" scarcity tags, "65 people bought this" popups, and pre-toggled cookie opt-ins are lifted straight from real shopping flows and annotated in-app, so the interface teaches you to read the interface.
The app's structure follows a clear expose-explain-resource flow. Each deceptive component links out to the systemic context behind it, framing the patterns as industry design rather than user error, which keeps the tone empowering instead of scolding.
The build practices what it argues. Low-carbon web principles and a lightweight, sparingly animated interface keep the footprint small, and a live screen tallying garbage trucks of dumped clothing since you opened the app ties the technical restraint to the sustainability message.
