Team Behind the Design
- Agency: Ember Design
- Client: Tommyknocker Brewery
- Category: Packaging - Food & Beverage
- Location: Buena Vista, Colorado, United States
- Project Brief: Redesign beer can packaging to attract a younger, adventurous audience through bold visuals while maintaining clarity, flavor recognition, and brand consistency.
My approach to evaluating beverage packaging design centers on shelf impact and scanability.
The Tommyknocker Brewery redesign leans into surreal collage while keeping flavor cues and data easy to find.
- Collage as Visual Language: The collage illustrations set the tone right away. I like how grayscale cutout figures are paired with selective color, especially around fruit and ingredient elements. That contrast keeps the artwork playful while guiding the eye toward flavor cues.
- Color Blocking & Flavor Recognition: Each SKU uses a single, high-saturation base color that wraps the can. I find this effective at a distance, since color becomes the quickest way to tell flavors apart. The consistent use of full-can color keeps the lineup easy to read on shelf.
- Information Hierarchy: The vertical information panel introduces order alongside the artwork. I appreciate how condensed type, strong dividers, and modular spacing make style and ABV easy to scan. This structure balances the expressive visuals with clarity.
- Brand Integration: The oversized monochrome mascot anchors the design. I like that it sits behind the collage without competing for attention. Its scale and repetition make the cans immediately recognizable as Tommyknocker.
- System Consistency: Despite the range of imagery, the system stays cohesive. The repeatable structure of color wrap, collage front, mascot, and data panel keeps each SKU distinct while holding the lineup together.
