Mike Brown Design created the “Understanding Bernie Sanders,” poster to transform a political platform into a visual narrative.

This print piece is a truly unique approach that stands at the intersection of political advocacy, inclusivity, and clean, modernist design principles.

Firstly, it's a great example of how color and type can work together to create a dynamic layout.

The poster’s full-bleed gradient background shifts from a rich cyan to a cooler sky blue. This is punctuated by the year "2016" set vertically down the right side.

This type is a simple but effective way to add movement and energy to the page. It also helps to balance the dense, left-aligned content on the other side.

We also like the typographic restraint shown in this design. It ensures that the content remains the most important element.

For instance, the quotes are easily digestible, thanks to the generous line spacing and logical groupings. This approach aligns with design principles where uncluttered layouts improve communication.

Hand-drawn style American Sign Language illustrations appear right alongside key quotes. These simple black-and-white sketches are powerful, inclusive design elements that you rarely see in political materials.

The design for this poster is a great success because its purpose is so clear. It’s not just promoting a candidate, but fostering understanding. It’s a powerful example of how design can serve a greater social purpose.

You can use your design to do more than just sell something; you can make it a tool that helps people connect with and understand complex ideas.
