Standout Features:

  • Maximalist color blocking with purposeful disruption
  • Dynamic typography that reflects youth activism
  • Integrated photography with a high-energy composition

Crafted by NICHTS + NIEMAND, the Wisherbar poster for the City of Braunschweig’s youth program is a vibrant call to action. It uses bold design elements like assertive typography, strong color blocking, and motion-filled photos to create an energetic visual that speaks directly to the city’s youth about political involvement.

Intersecting blocks of electric pink, vibrant mustard yellow, and bright white dominate the poster design, serving as stages for information. The "WISHERBAR" headline reverses white on pink for a strong focal point.

This aggressive, geometric color blocking is both disruptive and functional, segmenting information while grabbing attention on the street.

The effectiveness of this approach is well-documented, with research by Lu (2022) highlighting that bright color contrast is what enables a poster to stand out from other publicity and quickly capture viewer attention.

The design employs bold, condensed all-caps sans-serif for headlines. This is paired with smaller, mixed-font text for other information. Key phrases are highlighted with color reversals, such as white on magenta and vice versa.

The chunky, compact type, with its zine-like urgency, immediately establishes a bold, inclusive, and action-demanding tone.

The poster integrates a high-energy photograph of a diverse group of youths jumping and cheering. This candid image, placed in the upper third, has its subjects breaking into the text grid.

This composition is cinematic and raw, capturing unfiltered movement and emotion, and placing the target audience directly in the visual narrative.

A key insight from the Wisherbar poster is the effective use of layered design, where typography, color blocks, and photography interact dynamically.

This approach creates a visually rich and engaging composition that holds attention, a valuable lesson for any print campaign competing for notice in a crowded urban environment.
