  • Project Brief: Create a commercial that connects IKEA products with everyday college life through relatable humor, practical solutions, and playful student-focused storytelling.

IKEA Canada targets messy student life in "Made for College." Pigeon Brands leans into the chaos, using a single piece of student slang to do double duty as the commercial's entire concept.

The wordplay is the whole idea. "Cram here" appears over a cluttered desk, pitching the KALLAX desk — cram for exams, cram your stuff into it, same word, same screen. "Under here"tucks PÄRKLA storage bags beneath the bed, the most literal student space hack in the catalog. "And in here"tags a DRÖNJÖNS wastepaper basket nearly overflowing with crumpled paper...because cramming also produces a lot of trash.

The concept is genuinely clever: one verb that means studying, hoarding, and stuffing things into small spaces all at once, matched to products that solve exactly those problems.

The execution is where the wink doesn't quite land. The joke asks you to hold three meanings of "cram" in your head simultaneously across a 15-second spot, and most viewers will just read the obvious one.

The wordplay is there if you're looking for it, but the commercial doesn't slow down long enough to let it register as intentional rather than incidental.

What does work is the visual honesty. Warm, slightly dim bedroom lighting and genuine student clutter. It's the kind that looks lived-in rather than art-directed. Students watching it recognize the mess because it's their mess, not an idealized version of it.

The price tags land harder in that context. $1.99 for something under the bed feels like a real solution, not a retail pitch.

For "Made for College," concept earns more credit than the execution delivers. A funnier or differently-paced reveal might have let the double meaning breathe. As it stands, it's a solid student-life ad with a smarter joke hiding inside it than most viewers will catch.
