Sorge has been doing my taxes for several years. I have several accounts and they have always been helpful in explaining returns, refunds or estimated taxes. Recently; with an IRS issue, they provided excellent personal assistance.

Been with the Monona Wisconsin office for close to 19 years. Informed them that I was changing CPA's to a different firm. Forward 1 year and my Sorge account made a mis-stake on my 2022 tax return cost me $16k with penalties interest to the IRS in 2024 because one of their accountants use the wrong number in a place by mis-stake and literally messed up my 2023 quarterlies, said I had $24k coming back and that we where going to apply that to the next years quarterlies, little did I know that was wrong and I get stuck paying, my new accountant says I should go after Sorge CPA for the $1000 + in penalties and interest, I look at it as I made the right move to find a different firm. The only reason I started looking for a different firm to begin with is their fee's just kept increasing and increasing over the years until it seemed like they were on the payroll monthly and I realize $4000 filings fee's on top of constant large monthly fee's for taxes is ridiculous. It now cost me a quarter of the cost that it did.

We have always used a CPA to prepare our taxes. This year, we planned to move to what we thought was a local, large firm and had chosen this organization. This was a huge mistake. First, they promised if all materials were submitted by 3/18 (ours were), they guaranteed your return would be completed on time. Not only did they fail to do this, they simply filed for an extension without ever letting us know. As it was getting closer to the date taxes were due, I reached out to ask about the status. When they indicated they weren’t going to meet the 4/15 deadline and had filed for an extension on our behalf, I asked if they were going to let us know if we owed taxes so we could pay without incurring interest and penalties. The tax preparer who had been assigned to us said she’d calculate an estimate. Later that day, she came back and said we should pay over $22k and just apply any overpayment to next year. We knew this was a gross over estimate and an utter display of incompetence. We called and attempted to escalate the issue but were told they only communicate using the app. We were never able to speak with anyone other than the Reception staff. We immediately pulled our business and went back to our old CPA. We estimated our own tax, which was over $13k less than they had indicated. I did lose my $100 deposit but they had the nerve to try to charge me another $400 for this incompetence and act like they did me a favor by waiving it. Please do not ever use this organization if you care about your financial wellbeing. We are two educated professionals who learned that this place can not be trusted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a tax preparation company and a CPA?

The main difference is scope. Tax preparation companies prepare and file returns, while Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) provide deeper financial guidance and long-term tax strategy.

How do tax firms typically charge?

Tax companies usually charge either a flat fee or an hourly rate. Most simple individual returns cost about $200 to $300, while more complex returns often run from $300 to $800.

Pricing modelTypical costHow it worksBest for
Flat fee$200 to $300 for simple returnsOne set price for the returnSimple personal taxes
Flat fee for complex return$300 to $800Higher fixed price based on forms and complexity Itemized deductions, self-employment, investments
Hourly rate$100 to $200You pay for the time spent on the workComplex or unclear cases
State return add-on$50 to $150Extra charge for filing state taxes Federal + state filling
Amendment or revision$50 to $300Extra charge to fix or update a filed returnCorrected returns

Tax companies usually raise prices when returns become more complex. Multiple income sources, self-employment, rental property, investments, and business filings all increase the cost. Large firms, CPAs, and firms in high-cost cities also tend to charge more.

Can tax companies represent me in an audit?

No. Only certain licensed tax professionals can represent you in a tax audit.

Professional Can represent you in an auditNotes
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) YesFull representation rights before the IRS
Enrolled Agent (EA) YesFederally licensed tax specialist
Tax attorneyYesHandles complex disputes and legal cases
Tax preparation companySometimesOnly if the preparer is a CPA or EA
Unlicensed tax preparerNoCannot represent clients before the IRS

Most tax companies prepare and file tax returns, but cannot represent clients during an audit unless they employ licensed professionals such as CPAs or Enrolled Agents. Only those credentials allow full representation before the IRS.

Do best tax companies offer Identity Protection (IP) PINs?

No. Tax companies do not issue Identity Protection PINs.

The IRS issues the Identity Protection PIN directly to taxpayers to prevent tax fraud and identity theft. Tax companies can help you request or manage the PIN during tax filing, but they cannot generate or assign one.

The PIN is a six-digit code that must be included when filing a tax return. It confirms your identity and prevents someone else from filing a return using your Social Security number.

What happens if a tax company has a data breach?

Tax preparation companies must report the breach, notify clients, and take steps to stop tax fraud.

If a tax company experiences a data breach, federal rules require immediate action to protect taxpayer information and prevent fraudulent filings.

Required actions include:

  • Report the breach to the IRS to help block fraudulent tax returns linked to stolen taxpayer data.
  • Notify state tax agencies and law enforcement, such as the FBI or Secret Service.
  • Inform affected clients that their personal or financial information may be compromised.
  • Investigate the breach by hiring cybersecurity or forensic experts to identify how the data was accessed and stop further exposure.

Tax preparation firms must also follow the FTC Safeguards Rule, which requires them to maintain a written security plan that protects taxpayer data.Â
