I will share my experience with Technbrains aka Koder Labs a year out from their service.I hired this company in May 2024 to Develop a two sided market app for my business. They worked off of a feature and product list I created and brought from another developer. They claimed they can complete this within three months and make sure it is scalable and viable for growth.I will say that the team itself was very organized and structured initially, and they had great communication. I had a great relationship with two of the members of their team. I ended my business with coder once they were near completion and I asked for a quote for two final Features that were important for my app, which included a background check API integration, and a stripe payment integration. They quoted me over $10,000 for these two features which I felt was too high. I received much lower quotes when I shopped around with other developers. But this is not even half of the issue.Soon after I found a tech cofounder to join forces with me. The app was not set up correctly in the backend, and we have allowed several developers to check out our servers and backend to which they have all said the same thing. The backend is a mess and some developers refused to even touch it because it was so confusing. My notifications have been wonky since I left them last year. We just found the root of the cause is the way they set up the sqs to 50 minutes Instead of 50 seconds. This has caused an expensive and ongoing issue for the last eight months. In addition to this they name so many folders do not delete. They also used fire base and a WS, which are too conflicting back in servers. The entire set up of my app is unnecessarily complicated. And has been a constant expensive fix for me. there were many features that are hardcoded, which were not necessary. Which means I cannot change very very simple things in the app, especially when they were using flutter flow to develop the app. I do not recommend this company to anyone. It is clear that they purposely made the app to be complicated, so that no other developer would want to touch it and I would end up back with them. To top it off, there were some very, very sloppy mistakes at the end of our business when they knew I would be leaving them due to the expensive quote. It seemed as they were in a hurry to finish off with me, so they made less time to properly ensure the app was in a good standing. On top of all this, when I made them aware of these issues, they would never accept any kind of accountability. If you want a good quality app, I would recommend you spend a little more on something that is worth it. In the end you will end up paying far more For fixing stupid unnecessary mistakes for months or even years after it has been developed.I also want to know that none of the employees are actually stationed here in the US. They are ALL offshore workers. In addition to that, look at all of their reviewers who gave them five stars. They are all fake accounts with only one review, which is just for TechNBrains.

Do NOT work with this company for ANY services. I called to get more information for a web project of mine. A female answered and was very rude to me. I asked to speak to a manager and they said "sure one moment" and hung up. Very unprofessional, will NOT be reaching out again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key services of an eCommerce development company for small businesses?

Small business eCommerce development agencies offer comprehensive services tailored to the needs, budgets, and operations of a startup or emerging enterprise. These include:

  • Strategy and discovery: Defining business goals, target audiences, technical requirements, and project roadmap.
  • User interface (UI)/user experience (UX) design: Creating the site structure, user flows, visual design system, and interactive elements to support a smooth shopping experience.
  • Custom eCommerce website development: Building or customizing an online store through platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, or Magento based on the business's needs and growth plans.
  • eCommerce mobile app development: Producing an application for mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets) using native or cross-platform strategies to directly communicate with customers.
  • System integration: Connecting tools and tech, such as payment gateways, inventory management solutions, data analytics tools, and fulfillment solutions, to your eCommerce store.
  • Maintenance and post-launch support: Providing post-launch monitoring, feature enhancement, performance optimization, and debugging.

Many small business eCommerce development services also offer digital marketing services that span brand strategy, search engine optimization (SEO), content marketing, social media marketing, and paid advertising.

Some also provide advanced tools and technologies, such as AR/VR (for virtual try on), AI chatbots, and AI recommendation engines.

Should you build a custom eCommerce website or use a pre-made theme for your small business?

It depends on your project goals, budget, and timeline. Build a custom eCommerce website if it is your core business platform. Choose a pre-made theme if you need to validate a concept or confirm market demand quickly.

Here are more details about each to better help you choose:

Custom eCommerce websitePre-made theme for eCommerce
Advantages
  • Higher control over the design and functionality
  • Stronger brand differentiation
  • More tailored user experience
  • More flexibility for long-term growth
  • More affordable upfront
  • Faster to launch
  • Easier to update and maintain
  • Requires less technical expertise
Disadvantages
  • High upfront costs
  • Longer development time
  • May need some technical support for ongoing maintainance
  • Limited customization and functionality
  • Higher chance of having a design as the competition
  • Can be more expensive in the long run due to third-party plugins and integrations
Best for
  • Businesses that treat eCommerce as a core sales channel
  • Brands with unique functionality needs
  • Companies with larger catalogs or complex workflows
  • Small businesses launching quickly
  • Startups testing a concept or market
  • Brands with simpler store requirements

How long does it take for a new small eCommerce store to go live?

A small eCommerce store can take between 1 week and over 6 months to go live, depending on your goals, budget, core features and functions, technical complexity, and security requirements. Here is an estimated timeline based on project type:

  • Launchpad eCommerce stores take 1-8 weeks to develop, with predesigned themes and out-of-the-box features.
  • Basic eCommerce stores may need 6-12 weeks, and include payment processing and shipping features, SEO setup, and a catalog of up to 100 products.
  • Medium-complexity stores may take 3-6 months, with custom designs, unique functionalities, and key third-party integrations.
  • Enterprise-grade stores require at least 6 months to build and have advanced tools and features, like AI and AR/VR capabilities, ERP integration, and complex user roles and permissions.

What eCommerce platform is best for your small business?

The best eCommerce platform for your business will depend on your existing systems, team's technical capabilities, growth plan, budget, and security and compliance requirements. Below are the most common eCommerce platforms and when to best use each one:

  • Choose a SaaS eCommerce platform, like Shopify, Wix, or Squarespace, if you have limited technical experience and want a more affordable, easy-to-manage solution. These platforms offer built-in features and typically handle hosting, security, and PCI compliance, making them a practical option for many small businesses.
  • Select an open-source eCommerce platform, like WooCommerce or Magento, if you require high customization and greater control over your store's functionality and integrations. These platforms are often better suited to businesses with technical support or development resources, since setup, maintenance, and security management are more hands-on.
  • Pick a headless commerce setup, like Shopify Headless or BigCommerce, if you prioritize omnichannel experiences and have the budget and technical team to support it. Headless commerce is usually best for businesses with more complex requirements rather than organizations looking for a simple launch.

When should a small business hire an eCommerce development company instead of building in-house?

The decision to hire an eCommerce development company for small businesses depends on your internal capacity, business priorities, budget, and timeline.

Hire an eCommerce development company for small businesses if:

  • You want to build highly tailored solutions, but do not have the internal expertise.
  • Managing and maintaining your eCommerce solution takes time away from core business operations.
  • You want to add advanced features, like predictive analytics, and need specialized expertise.
  • You are experiencing frequent downtime, performance issues, or cybersecurity risks on your eCommerce store that your team cannot resolve internally.
  • You need to launch quickly and want an experienced team to handle strategy, design, and technical execution.

Build your eCommerce store in-house if:

  • You already have the time, expertise, and resources to build and maintain the store internally.
  • A standard out-of-the-box solution meets your current needs better than a fully custom site.
  • Your business requires frequent day-to-day updates, and you want direct control over site changes.
  • You have an internal team that can manage security, compliance, and technical maintenance confidently.
