- Project Brief: Create print design for The Woolmark Company’s “Return to Real” campaign that highlights wool’s natural intelligence through rural imagery, authentic wool-growing stories, and a focus on the people behind the fibre.
Manufacturing print can make a strong case for a material when the ad stands right where that material grows. The Woolmark Company, which promotes Australian wool worldwide, teamed up with Wieden+Kennedy Sydney to plant a billboard on a working wool-growing property in regional New South Wales.
"Return to Real" features a plain white frame that stands in the paddock with nothing stretched across it, so the green hillside fills the space a printed image would take. Grazing sheep become the photo, and they shift position every time you look.
The headline sets up a riddle about the creators of the world's smartest fibre, who wear white coats without being scientists. Hundreds of fleecy answers stand right behind the words, so the joke lands the moment your eye drops to the field.
Thin wires hang the white Woolmark swirl, the headline, and a small Return to Real sign-off from the top rail. The clean capital letters stay legible against bright midday grass and take on a softer cast as the light fades toward evening.
