I have been using Wegner CPAs for my small business and personal accounting needs for over a decade and will do so for decades more! Swati Jain and Noel Willis have been my team at Wegner and a great team they are! They promptly answer my questions, guide me through changing circumstances in my business & personal taxes and how to best navigate them. Their commitment and dedication to patiently advising me on best practices for bookkeeping and payroll to minimize my tax liabilities is invaluable as I can often overlook these in my busy life. I highly recommend Swati, Noel, and Wegner CPAs!

I've been working with several small and large accounting firms during my 33 years managing businesses in Wisconsin. Wegner CPA is, hands down, the best company I've worked with over the years. They provide valuable insights from a tax and general business perspective. Furthermore, their bookkeeping staff is top-notch, professional and quick, and not the least, as affordable as some of the smaller outfits I've worked with. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Used them for taxes a few years ago. They did a good job. But had an urgent situation come up where I needed to help very quickly. The call would only take 5-10 minutes. They were very staunch on scheduling an appointment a week out and couldn't spare 5-10 minutes. The situation blew up and I missed out on a big return. Haven't used them since and never will again. Also never heard from them again. Definitely a churn and burn place. Had no interest in building a relationship with their client. My current accountant does a great job for 2/3 of the price and takes the time to talk with me if something comes up.

Big thanks to EWH and their team in helping establish some great operating standards for my small business. Terry has been instrumental in giving us guidance, as well as building out a business plan for our growth. I'm very appreciative for their hard work, and would recommend them to anyone seeking outside accounting and payroll - especially folks who are not accounting and payroll experts who might need a little extra hand-holding!

Been with the Monona Wisconsin office for close to 19 years. Informed them that I was changing CPA's to a different firm. Forward 1 year and my Sorge account made a mis-stake on my 2022 tax return cost me $16k with penalties interest to the IRS in 2024 because one of their accountants use the wrong number in a place by mis-stake and literally messed up my 2023 quarterlies, said I had $24k coming back and that we where going to apply that to the next years quarterlies, little did I know that was wrong and I get stuck paying, my new accountant says I should go after Sorge CPA for the $1000 + in penalties and interest, I look at it as I made the right move to find a different firm. The only reason I started looking for a different firm to begin with is their fee's just kept increasing and increasing over the years until it seemed like they were on the payroll monthly and I realize $4000 filings fee's on top of constant large monthly fee's for taxes is ridiculous. It now cost me a quarter of the cost that it did.

We have always used a CPA to prepare our taxes. This year, we planned to move to what we thought was a local, large firm and had chosen this organization. This was a huge mistake. First, they promised if all materials were submitted by 3/18 (ours were), they guaranteed your return would be completed on time. Not only did they fail to do this, they simply filed for an extension without ever letting us know. As it was getting closer to the date taxes were due, I reached out to ask about the status. When they indicated they weren’t going to meet the 4/15 deadline and had filed for an extension on our behalf, I asked if they were going to let us know if we owed taxes so we could pay without incurring interest and penalties. The tax preparer who had been assigned to us said she’d calculate an estimate. Later that day, she came back and said we should pay over $22k and just apply any overpayment to next year. We knew this was a gross over estimate and an utter display of incompetence. We called and attempted to escalate the issue but were told they only communicate using the app. We were never able to speak with anyone other than the Reception staff. We immediately pulled our business and went back to our old CPA. We estimated our own tax, which was over $13k less than they had indicated. I did lose my $100 deposit but they had the nerve to try to charge me another $400 for this incompetence and act like they did me a favor by waiving it. Please do not ever use this organization if you care about your financial wellbeing. We are two educated professionals who learned that this place can not be trusted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an accounting agency?

An accounting agency is a professional service firm that helps businesses manage their financial records. This includes tracking income and expenses, preparing financial reports, handling taxes, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations.

In short, an accounting agency makes sure a company’s finances are accurate, organized, and aligned with legal standards.

How can an accounting agency help businesses streamline finances?

An accounting agency helps businesses streamline their finances by organizing and managing all financial activities in one place. This includes budgeting, bookkeeping, payroll, and tax preparation.

By taking over these tasks, the agency reduces errors, saves time, and improves cash flow. It also gives business owners a clear view of where their money is going, helping them make smarter financial decisions.

Which types of companies benefit most from outsourced accounting services?

Small to mid-sized businesses benefit most from outsourced accounting services. These companies often don’t have the time or budget to hire a full in-house accounting team.

Startups, eCommerce brands, service providers, and growing businesses use outsourced accounting to save money, stay compliant, and focus on core operations. It’s especially helpful for companies that need expert financial support but want to avoid the overhead costs of hiring full-time staff.

What are the top-rated accounting agencies on DesignRush in 2025?

The top-rated accounting agencies on DesignRush in 2025 are:

  1. Marcum
  2. TGG Accounting
  3. Smith Schafer
  4. Kaufman Rossin
  5. Milestone
  6. Wipfli
  7. KMK Ventures
  8. Invensis
  9. Crowe
  10. Baker Tilly

What core and specialized accounting services do these agencies offer?

Accounting agencies offer core services like bookkeeping, payroll, financial reporting, tax preparation, and budgeting. These cover the basics every business needs to stay organized and compliant.

They also provide specialized services such as forensic accounting, audit support, financial forecasting, and CFO consulting. These are useful for companies with complex financial needs, growth plans, or legal concerns.

How much do professional accounting services cost in 2025?

Accounting costs vary depending on how small or big your needs are, who you hire, and where you're located. In 2025, accountants in the US typically charge between $150 and $400 per hour. Junior accountants or bookkeepers are more affordable, often ranging from $40 to $100 per hour.

Basic monthly bookkeeping services can cost around $300 to $2,500 per month, depending on how many transactions you have and how detailed the work is.

How quickly can businesses expect financial clarity and improvements?

Most businesses see financial clarity within the first 30 to 90 days of working with an accounting agency. This depends on how organized your current records are and the scope of services you need.

For example, cleaning up books or setting up new systems can take a few weeks. But once that’s done, agencies usually deliver clearer reports, better cash flow insights, and fewer compliance risks fairly quickly. You’ll start noticing improvements as soon as the agency finishes its initial review and puts systems in place.

What criteria should businesses use when choosing an accounting agency?

When choosing an accounting agency, look for:

  • Experience with your industry
  • Clear pricing and services
  • Certified staff, like CPAs
  • Good communication and quick responses
  • Modern tools for reports and tracking

Always check reviews or ask for referrals. A good agency should explain things clearly and help your business grow.

What red flags indicate an unreliable accounting partner?

Watch out for these signs:

  • Vague pricing or hidden fees
  • Slow replies or poor communication
  • No certifications like CPA or licensed staff
  • Outdated software or manual-only processes
  • Missed deadlines or frequent errors

If an agency can’t explain things clearly or makes you feel unsure, it’s a sign to look elsewhere.

What essential questions should you ask before signing with an accounting agency?

Before signing with an accounting agency, you should ask some of the following essential questions:

  1. What services do you include in your fee?
  2. Do you have experience in my industry?
  3. Who will handle my account? Are they certified?
  4. What tools or software do you use?
  5. How often will I get reports or updates?
  6. How do you handle deadlines and tax filings?

Clear answers mean they know what they’re doing and that you’ll be in good hands.

How does working with an accounting agency differ from using accounting software or in-house staff?

An accounting agency gives you expert support without hiring full-time staff. Unlike software, it doesn't just track numbers; it explains them and helps you plan.

Compared to in-house teams, agencies are often more affordable and more experienced, especially for small businesses. You also get access to the latest tools and tax updates without managing it all yourself.

What tools, reporting systems, and compliance platforms do top accounting agencies rely on today?

Top accounting agencies use tools like QuickBooks and Xero for bookkeeping, NetSuite for full financial management, and Gusto or ADP for payroll.

They also use TaxJar or Avalara for sales tax compliance and Fathom or LivePlan for reporting and forecasting. These tools help automate tasks, reduce errors, and keep businesses compliant with tax and financial laws.
