The Instacart app makes shopping for groceries online feel totally natural. The entire process from start to finish can be handled through the app. Users simply specify their location, create an account, and choose a local grocer to shop from. From their they can begin browsing items -- either from the suggested items proposed by Instacart, or via search. Users also have the option to browse by category (eg; produce, pantry, bakery).
Interaction with the app is intuitive and incorporates many best practice microinteractions that can make use of a platform more enjoyable. For example, when viewing an item the user decides they’re no longer interested in, they can pull down to return to the original category page. When scrolling horizontally through products in a sub-category, the user can pull to left to enter the full listing page for that subcategory.
The app has a minimalist but lighthearted design that puts the focus on the products. The app features a white background and lightweight gray typography and iconography. Bright green and orange accent colors are used to call attention to important information, denote user actions, and highlight calls-to-action. The app also does a good job of featuring high quality imagery for every product, so food looks enticing and users are never left in the dark about what they’re ordering.
