I would never recommend to use this company for advertising. They claim to be experts but they got my google ads account banned almost immediately after running ads for me. It took them 3 months to resolve the none existent issue. I had to pay there advising fee for every month that the account was banned, and when they finally managed to get it running again, they ran the worst returning campaign in my companies history. Don't waste you time or money with these people.

On 09/16/2022 I signed a contract with Your Business Marketer for: Online Display Ads, Paid Social Media Ads, and Ads Content. The contract states:With the Online Displays ads, they use “Programmatic Ads Demographic/Geographic Targeted Ads”, with the objective of “Increasing online awareness through highly targeted display ads”. The Campaign Details state: Targeting through data homeowners in the local area fortop-of-mind awareness. Ads to deliver 1,500,000impressions over the course of the campaign. Adstargeting specified data and geographic areas to increasesite traffic and engage the audience. Ads designed to drivepeople to the website. The underlined paragraph are the parts of the contract that has been promised but not been delivered.I have been promised a Behavioral target so only customers interested in my service (Solar Panels System) will be targeted with the ads and directed to my website, this has not been delivered since 100% of the leads are not interested, 100% are not real customers, 100% of them did click on any add, as you can see in the spreadsheet I create for all the leads from Your Business Marketer. My ads are all in Spanish and my target is Spanish-speaking people in the Chicago Metropolitan Area, this also has not been delivered, as you can see in the spreadsheet. My ads have not been Demographic and geographically targeted since 29% are not hispanic, 13% are from another state, and 3% are out of the country. With Paid Social Media Ads, they use Targeted Social Media. Build social media interaction and action with ads growing an engaged targeted audience to raise awareness and increase exposure. The contract in the Campain Details for Targeted Social Media, states:Social media ads on Facebook and Instagram to gainawareness to homeowners in the local area, as well asgrowing a following. Ongoing ads driving them to takeaction leading to long-term consistent client growth forSolar Professionals of Illinois. This has also been promised but not delivered since most of the leads they provide are not homeowners, also I have an application that every time somebody is on my website I get notified, and that never happens, what makes me think that the money they supposed to expend in ads they did not and most of the lead has been fabricated.I create a spreadsheet with every single lead they provide, there show these results:189 LEADS100 % not real customers100 % they didn't click on any add100 % are not interested29 % are not Hispanic (all ads we create are in Spanish)25 % came with no name or phone, only email address20 % have bad information13 % are from another state (no good geofencing) - 2411 % bad or wrong phone number10 % never answer6 % don't have a house3 % don't have a name3 % out of the country (really bad geofencing) - 62 % an old person living in an assisted living home - 42 % hung up1 % have solar panelsAll this analysis confirms my suspicion that the leads have been fabricated and are not real.Is worth noticing that four of these leads are from old people living in nursing assisted homes, waiting for a call from a family member, a son, or a grandchild, and instead they get a call from me when they never were interested, Your Business Marketer use them to fulfill a quota of leads they need to show, this prove, they have no shame. On a phone conversation with Mike Snellenberger on 01/18/2023, I expressed my desire to cancel our arrangement since they were not delivering what they promise and the leads were very bad, and he refuse. On 03/21/2023 I spoke with the fraud department of US Bank because I continue to get charged after I put a stop payment on 03/02/2023, they state that the company use a Quickbooks service and was able to get around my stop payments and get paid.I have to close my business checking account because I believe they will not stop with the contract, they will keep on trying to get more and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a digital marketing agency for small businesses?

A digital marketing agency for small businesses is a company that tailor-fits solutions for smaller enterprises to help widen their brand reach and digital presence. It focuses on understanding the specific challenges and limitations of the business to provide personalized and cost-effective strategies aligned with the client’s goals.

Digital marketing agencies for small businesses do everything regular ones do. However, the key difference lies in the flexibility of its services as follows:

  • Hands-on client service approach to attend to specific project needs
  • Wide leeway for pricing models to accommodate smaller budgets
  • Proficiency in a distinct industry niche
  • Closer engagement and collaboration with the marketing team

Small businesses usually reduce their marketing budget to cover costs like labor and inventory. In the US, 47% of small business owners run their marketing team on their own, on top of other tasks from day-to-day operations, since it is a less expensive alternative to outsourcing a marketing team.

In hindsight, an in-house marketing staff may look cost-effective. However, factoring in retention, training, and upskilling can be costly for small businesses in the long run. Digital marketing companies that cater to small businesses provide solutions to these challenges. High-quality marketing doesn’t have to take much of the operational costs, as proven by Maya’s Cake Cartel case study:

Born out of the pandemic, Maya’s Cake Cartel bakes single-serve cakes, making lockdown celebrations extra special. Maya, the owner, collaborated with SplurgeMedia to expand the customer base of her small business across all touchpoints. SplurgeMedia took on the challenge by incorporating Maya’s colorful personality into the brand strategy and suggested creating a website where customers could pre-order cakes.

The agency also handled other aspects of marketing services, such as web design and development, website hosting, maintenance and management, copywriting, and content strategy. These increased client inquiries through the new website, search engine visibility, and brand consistency across all platforms, leading Maya’s Cake Cartel to new customers and increased return on investment (ROI) from the rebranding.

What services do marketing companies for small businesses provide?

Marketing companies for small businesses provide scalable services committed to improving business awareness through branding and design, content, SEO, email marketing, website development, and social media, among others.

The services that marketing agencies for small businesses provide include:

  • Branding and design: Strong visual branding elevates the identity of a small business. Marketing companies offer services such as strategy development, including creating a defined unique selling proposition (USP), logo design, brand style guide, and establishing a consistent voice and tone across platforms.
  • Content marketing: Investing in producing quality content such as blogs, short videos, and infographics helps personalize the customer experience. Digital marketing companies offer these services, which can help small businesses gain and retain audiences.
  • Website development: This service includes web design optimized for user interface and experience (UI/UX), mobile responsiveness, and basic features customized based on budget. Clients with eCommerce services often opt to develop an online marketplace to increase customer retention.
  • Search engine optimization (SEO): This service includes optimizing the visibility of small businesses by boosting their online reputation via Google My Business profile and online directories. If the business already has a website, services like local search marketing enable it to reach customers within a specified location. A digital marketing agency for small businesses can customize other SEO services like keyword research, link building, and on-page optimization to cater to the small business capacity.
  • Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising: Availing PPC services includes data-driven research on relevant pages and keywords, landing page optimization, targeted advertising via Google Ads, and analytics. This service is curated to reach specific demographics most likely to be converted into sales, driving faster results. It allows the in-house team to track clicks, impressions, conversions, and ROI, making it a cost-effective option for small businesses to level up their online presence with full budget control.
  • Email marketing: Building a mailing list is a service that enables the business to maintain an open line of communication with its regular customers. Incorporating updates, promos, and discounts can engage them more to generate leads without breaking the bank.
  • Social media marketing (SMM): This service includes establishing the social media presence of the small business across platforms. Part of this marketing service involves creating a content calendar, producing videos, images, and polls for posting to boost engagement, running social media ads, and community management.

How much is the average cost of digital marketing for small businesses?

The average cost of digital marketing for small businesses ranges from $51 to $10,000 a month. However, pricing models vary depending on the type of business and the services that the small business owner is willing to spend on.

  • Per hour: Clients pay an hourly fee based on the output done. Typically suited for businesses with less than ten employees.
  • Per project: Clients pay per project completion. This pricing model is suited for businesses with fewer than 30 employees.
  • Per month: Clients pay a monthly retainer fee for the marketing services. This price model is suitable for small businesses with more than 30 employees.

Here’s a breakdown of the average cost of digital marketing services per month:

  • Copywriting: $150 - $2,500
  • Web design: $125 - $3,375
  • SEO: $2,000 - $6,000
  • Content marketing: $3,900 - $12,000

Why should I hire a digital marketing agency for my small business?

You should hire a digital marketing agency for your small business to expand the reach of your products and attract the right customers based on data-driven marketing strategies.

Hiring a digital marketing company takes small businesses to the next level by:

  • Expanding brand visibility: Digital marketing agencies for small businesses specialize in growing the business’ presence through social media exposure, local search engines, and a well-targeted PPC demographic, among others. These companies define a small business’ unique selling proposition (USP), study the market, and leverage these data to generate actionable steps to grow the brand, whether it’s engagement, following, or sales.
  • Boosting ROI: Working with a digital marketing agency delivers higher investment returns than a small business implementing campaigns independently. With access to cutting-edge marketing tools and expertise in analyzing buyer personas, the agency can personalize the brand content and experience, which boosts sales by 94%.
  • Lowering operational cost: Unlike in-house teams, digital marketing agencies for small businesses come with no overhead and more flexible contracts, giving you more control over your investment.
  • Increasing foot traffic: By combining local SEO best practices and localized social media positioning, your digital marketing partner can increase your foot traffic, the number of inquiries, and product or service demo requests. In fact, 76% of consumers reportedly research a business before its physical location, which emphasizes the importance of geotargeting and local SEO to small businesses.
  • Introducing new technologies: Working with a digital marketing company opens small businesses to proprietary solutions, algorithms, and new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) used in creating top-notch marketing executions. Familiarizing themselves with these tools allows small business owners to adapt modernized strategies to keep their brand relevant.

SEO Discovery’s partnership with Dec Wizard, an India-based eCommerce business that sells home decorations, is a perfect example of implementing a digital marketing strategy for small businesses.

Dec Wizard faced challenges in building their online presence, preventing small businesses from reaching their target market and increasing brand awareness. SEO Discovery takes on the challenge and analyzes competitor content to identify the content gaps in Dec Wizard’s online presence. The digital marketing agency for small business applied findings in these processes to the social media strategy and incorporated a strong brand voice to improve brand recognition. The agency prioritized Facebook and Instagram as its primary platforms, which led to the following results:

  • Dec Wizard’s Instagram followers increased by 2.4% and 13.2% in audience engagement
  • Facebook ads reached more than 9,000 people in 9 days
  • Organic impressions for Dec Wizard’s Facebook page went up by 192%
  • Over 17,000 Facebook user were engaged, with a 276% increase in like reactions

How do I choose the best digital marketing agency for my small business?

To choose the best digital marketing agency for small business, follow these steps:

  1. Define your goals: Identify what you want to achieve with the digital marketing agency. A clear vision helps the marketing company define the service suitable for small businesses, whether it’s generating leads, improving brand awareness, boosting organic traffic on the website, or driving more sales.
  2. Set a budget. Determine the amount you can allocate for the digital marketing service for your small business. The budget sets realistic expectations for the digital marketing agency to work around what you have while delivering services that positively improve your brand.
  3. List the services you need: Based on your goals and budget, narrow down the services your small business needs. If you own an online marketplace, availing of eCommerce app development services might be better than PPC advertising. For small businesses that need to engage their audience, investing in brand identity and audience segmentation services should be a priority.
  4. Research potential agencies: Search online directories like DesignRush to find prospective digital marketing companies for your small business. Filter options based on your specific requirements, location, and budget.
  5. Check their industry expertise and tools: Explore the agencies’ websites to gain insights into their culture, approach, and scope of services. See if they specialize in digital marketing for small businesses to determine if your partnership will be sustainable in the long run. Look into the technologies and tools they use to implement marketing projects.
  6. Request for a client portfolio and reference: Their portfolio will give you a deeper look at the marketing campaigns they have worked on. Ask specifically for projects with the same niche as your small business. Reach out to their client references to discover their communication style, availability, flexibility regarding modifications, and overall work ethic.
  7. Explore reviews: Check authentic reviews on platforms like DesignRush or Google My Business to assess clients’ experiences and satisfaction.
  8. Shortlist the agencies: Pick agencies that align with your business best and communicate your intentions to work with them. Set an interview and ask about their experience to get to know them better.
  9. Send a request for proposal: Send them a digital marketing request for proposal (RFP) and ask for a project breakdown, including milestones, scope, schedule, costs, and other specific needs.
  10. Check the team's flexibility: Asses the communication style, client servicing, and creative and development process. Look for collaborative agencies that can tailor-fit their marketing solutions around your brand and are flexible for the future scalability of the campaign.
  11. Consider success metrics: Discuss the reporting process of the digital marketing agency and the transparency of their success metrics. Set regular standups for progress updates on the marketing campaign for your small business.
  12. Weigh value over price: Cost-effectiveness is a huge factor in choosing a suitable digital marketing partner, but don’t resort to the cheapest option without meticulously assessing the value that the agency will bring to your small business. Choosing value for a slightly higher price point will give you higher investment returns in the future.
  13. Make a choice: Review contracts carefully and select the ideal digital marketing agency partner for your small business.

What are the key success metrics of digital marketing agencies for small businesses?

The key success metrics of digital marketing agencies for small businesses measure the performance of marketing campaigns across different channels such as websites, social media, SEO, and email marketing, among others. For digital marketing, this includes the following success indicators:

  • Website traffic increase: Measures the growth in website visitors, whether organic or paid, during the campaign. Google Analytics is a helpful tool for measuring the number of visitors to a website and analyzing if the marketing strategy targets the right market demographic.
  • Boosted conversion rate: The number of website visitors who bought a product on your platform. To get the conversion rate, divide the total number of people who purchased a product by the total number of visitors who visited the website.
  • Higher return on investment (ROI): ROI assesses the effectiveness of the marketing campaign by tallying its expenses and comparing it to the revenue growth of the small business, whether it is an increase in sales, a hike in mail subscribers, or a growing social media community.
  • Click-through rate (CTR): This measures the number of times customers click your call-to-action (CTA) link. It indicates your digital marketing campaign’s level of engagement with its target market. To get the CTR, divide the total number of clicks by the number of times people saw your ad, post, or content.
  • Lesser bounce rate: Bounce rate is a metric that shows the number of potential customers leaving the page without making a purchase or doing anything else, also known as a potential lost sale. The lower the bounce rate, the better the engagement.
  • Social media engagement: Each social media platform has a different success metric. For example, on Facebook, businesses can see the demographic of their audience and the number of engagements, page likes, and impressions of the post. On the other hand, Instagram gives insights into the number of people who view a post, story, or reel and whether they are followers. In measuring these channel-specific metrics, it’s essential to go back to the campaign goals and give insights into the number of people who view a post, story, or reel. In measuring these channel-specific metrics, it’s essential to go back to the campaign's goals to provide more context in generating these data.
  • Search engine ranking: These metrics measure the websites that were optimized to achieve a higher ranking in search engines. Keyword rankings, search engine ranking page visibility, and authority also show the impact of an SEO marketing campaign.

For small businesses, the common benchmarks of a successful marketing campaign depend on these indicators:

  • Increase in net profit: Not to be confused with ROI, net profit refers to the total amount of money the business retains after incurring costs beyond the marketing campaign. To calculate the net profit, deduct the total expenses (cost of goods, operating expenses, interests, and taxes) from the revenue. For small businesses, it is crucial to realize the effectiveness of the marketing campaign by looking into the bigger picture, especially financially. Knowing the net profit enables businesses to move around resource allocations and invest in certain aspects of the company.
  • High net profit margin: This is calculated to show how much profit the company acquires for every dollar in revenue. Getting the result of a small business’s net profit allows the business owners to compare its profitability with its competitors. To compute this, divide the net profit by the total revenue and multiply it by 100%. A high profit margin enables you to minimize expenses and manage the day-to-day business operations more efficiently.
  • Customer acquisition cost (CAC): CAC indicates how much the business spends on acquiring a new customer. You can calculate it by dividing the sales and marketing expenses by the number of new customers.
  • Customer lifetime value (CLV): This benchmark measures the total net profit the business can make from a customer throughout their entire relationship with the brand. CLV goes beyond the first purchase. Considering repeat transactions, upsells, referrals, and loyalty paints a more comprehensive picture of how to target a certain demographic effectively. It enables the small business and its partner digital marketing agency to implement data-driven strategies by investing in its target market.
