Mobile App Development Review from Dorothy J. Aubrey

We paid $117,000 across two contracts $68,000 for development and $49,000 for marketing to Naked Development for a consumer-ready iOS and Android app and a full marketing funnel. They delivered neither. We originally requested delivery by Black Friday, the most critical sales window for a parent-focused consumer app. Naked Development proposed December as an alternative. That deadline was their own suggestion. They missed it. We extended to January, then February, then April, then issued a formal written Notice of Breach before giving them one final deadline the following June. Every deadline was missed. We were over 300% over timeline. When we finally handed the codebase to a second development firm, the app would not build on either iOS or Android. We paid thousands just to get it running enough to assess the damage. The contracted team was never fully assembled. Tickets were put on hold without explanation. Subscription management, the most critical feature of the app, was broken for months and never fixed by Naked. The commercial video Naked produced was unusable by launch, as cultural references had gone stale during the delay. We are software engineers who have led teams of over 100. These were not minor issues. They were basic, objective engineering failures. When we raised breach concerns with founder John Driscoll, his response was "let's just let our lawyers talk about it."We are aware of more than a dozen other former clients who experienced similar issues. Do not recommend.

Mobile App Development Review from Mimi Bouchard

I hired Naked Development in 2022 to build a new version of my mobile app. I paid $203,000 upfront (spread over six months essentially everything I had saved from my first year in business), and was told the app would be completed in five months, by Fall 2022.Instead, the project turned into nearly a year of delays, almost done updates, and declining involvement from their team. My very small internal team and I ended up doing much of the project management and QA work ourselves because progress had stalled so severely. Despite constant reassurances, no functional product was ever delivered.By mid-2023, I hired multiple external development teams to assess the code. Every single one independently concluded that the app was non-functional, unstable, not scalable, and could not be launched. They warned it would crash immediately and required a complete rebuild. I then hired a neutral third-party auditor with zero connection to any agency and his report confirmed the same findings. After paying over $200K, I had nothing usable. When I factored in delays, internal time lost, expert audits, and the cost of rebuilding from scratch, the financial impact to my business exceeded $500,000.After multiple attempts to resolve the situation privately were unsuccessful, I filed a lawsuit, which is now a matter of public record (Superhuman Inc. v. Naked Development). The case is set for trial in early 2026. While litigation is never something a founder hopes for, at a certain point it became the only responsible path given the evidence and the financial damage.I strongly recommend extreme caution when considering this agency.

Carl saved the day! I had a small project and a very short deadline to update my son’s legacy scholarship website. I figured I would need to beg a freelance website designer to work with my small budget and timeframe. Carl’s patience, responsiveness and solution-oriented suggestions were amazing. Most importantly for me, given the emotional sensitivity tied to the scholarship and my son’s passing, Carl was warm and empathetic. He not only responded quickly via email, but was quick to chat on the phone. An incredible service, and now I am excited to have Lighthouse Graphics host my site and make my website and fundraising professional.

LightHouse Graphics was instrumental in getting my outdoor rental equipment and guide service business off the ground. I knew that I wanted to share my passion for the outdoors with others but didn't know how to make that happen. Josh, Carl, and their team consulted and designed my website to help me showcase my equipment and favorite guide locations. The best part is, they taught me how to run and update my website myself after to add new products and guide locations. Very thankful for the team at LightHouse Graphics.

I absolutely love working with Lighthouse Graphics. I have been a returning client for about 3 years now and not only is their work amazing but they are always on top of the project and deliver way above my expectations. I recently worked with Carl to duplicate our site to Chinese for our overseas clients and he streamlined the project so efficiently and was so helpful! Communication is always clear every step of the way. He was also so great to help update a few pages since web design is so foreign to me! I could not recommend Lighthouse enough! Black Flag carried us from concept to production on a very complex website with multiple interest holders. Designing a website for the California Department of Education means that we serve a varied user base and must adhere to the highest accessibility standards. Black Flag took input from internal teams, educators, and other interested parties that would be accessing and using the site. They adapted their designs to meet the needs of various types of users, coming up with not only attractive design elements, but created code that added automation to eliminate some of the manual updates. Black Flag provided us with a high-quality product and were so much fun to work with along the way. A helpful tip: save some of your funding for ongoing maintenance because once you start working with them, you won’t want to stop!

Digital Design Agency Hiring Guide

What is a digital design agency?

A digital design agency is a specialized agency that creates and develops digital experiences, visual elements, and interfaces for electronic devices such as computers, tablets, and mobile phones.

These agencies work with businesses that seek to improve user engagement and brand presence using custom-designed websites, mobile apps, digital advertisements, and other graphic assets, considering factors like user experience (UX), interactivity, differences in screen size, color palette, and more.

Businesses that operate online encounter many challenges that require the expertise of specialized digital design agencies. Some common issues they experience include:

  • Complexities of crafting intuitive and visually appealing user interfaces
  • Difficulties in designing responsive layouts that adapt to various devices and screen sizes
  • Challenges with keeping consistent branding across all digital touchpoints
  • Lack of user engagement
  • Insufficient knowledge of technical optimization for digital assets
  • Inability to stay current with emerging digital design trends and technologies
  • Issues with meeting accessibility standards to ensure inclusivity for all users
  • Aligning digital design assets with broader marketing and brand strategies

Beyond elevated brand perception and competitive edge, the benefits of an effective design are considerable. According to Forrester Research, every dollar invested in user experience yields a 99% return on investment (ROI). The study also reveals that effective user interfaces (UI) can boost conversion rates by up to 200%, while good UX can increase them to 400%.

Success story

Although the data speaks for itself, the following case study showcases the pivotal role digital design plays in elevating a brand’s online identity:

  • Challenge: AI company Instabase sought to revitalize its digital presence. The goal was to modernize the site, stimulate engagement across its forward-thinking audience, and simplify the conversion process.
  • Solution: Baunfire redesigned Instabase’s website with engaging animations and interactions to tell a humanized brand story. The digital design agency introduced a new, inviting color palette and simple, elevated typography to reflect the company's innovative identity. The site was further optimized to maintain a seamless experience across different mobile devices.
  • Results: The updated website effectively communicated Instabase’s intended brand narrative. Beyond the refreshed identity, the adjustments led to a more intuitive user experience and increased demo inquiries.

What do digital design agencies do?

Digital design agencies focus on the visual appearance of products, brands, and services, helping brands introduce impactful, visually engaging digital designs that resonate with their target audience. These services are crucial for businesses looking to differentiate themselves in a crowded digital market, ensuring their brand stands out and effectively communicates its values and ethos.

Key services of digital design agencies include:

  • Website and app design
Digital design companies create visually appealing, user-friendly, responsive websites and applications with smooth functionality across devices. The service encompasses layout design, color scheme selection, typography design, and ensuring the site is optimized for speed and performance.
  • UI/UX design
Digital design agencies conduct user research to understand the target audience’s behaviors and preferences. Based on the findings, they create wireframes, prototypes, and interactive mockups to test and refine the design.
  • Visual concept creation
Digital design agencies undergo ideation sessions, create mood boards, and sketch initial designs to create visual concepts that outline a brand or project's core message and aesthetic.
  • Design audit
These service providers conduct design audits to evaluate a brand's visual elements' effectiveness, consistency, and quality. They assess these elements against best practices and brand guidelines to identify inconsistencies, outdated elements, and areas for improvement.
  • Visual elements design
Digital design agencies produce a variety of graphic elements, such as banners, icons, illustrations, and infographics. They ensure these elements align with the brand's visual identity and are optimized for different devices and screen resolutions.
  • Branding
Digital design agencies help businesses establish a unique, recognizable, and cohesive brand presence through visual assets that can be used across websites, social media profiles, digital ads, and other digital platforms.
  • Content creation
Digital design companies create engaging and shareable content that can be used in various digital marketing campaigns. They are often in charge of the scripting, storyboarding, filming, editing, and post-production for videos, as well as designing and animating graphics for use in explainer videos, social media posts, and digital ads.
  • Product maintenance
Digital design agencies offer ongoing product maintenance to ensure the continuous performance and relevance of digital products, which includes regular updates, performance monitoring, bug fixing, and enhancements based on user feedback and technological advancements.

Success Story

To showcase the impact of advanced digital design services, our experts selected the following case study demonstrating how RNO1 revitalized the EOS Network Foundation's brand strategy and amplified its digital footprint.

  • Challenge: ENF faced the critical task of repositioning its brand following a significant separation from Block.one (B1). The company aspired to reframe its digital identity and customer experience (CX) to reflect its commitment to decentralization and innovation within the EOS Network.
  • Solution: RNO1 collaborated closely with ENF's leadership to develop a new brand strategy and architecture characterized by fluid and futuristic elements. The design team created design systems, a unified design language, and intuitive UX and UI designs. This adhered to the ENF’s vision of minimalism, with the partnership also covering Web3 experience design and blockchain strategy, ensuring the new digital presence was aligned with the innovative nature of the EOS ecosystem.
  • Results: The Design-First collaboration led to a transformative rebranding that effectively communicated ENF’s vision and goals, with the project underscoring the potential of decentralization as a catalyst for positive global change.

What is the difference between graphic design and digital design?

The main difference between graphic and digital design is medium and interaction:

  • Graphic design focuses on creating static visuals for print and digital media, using typography, color theory, and layout principles.
  • Digital design emphasizes interactive and dynamic visual content for digital platforms, such as websites and mobile apps, incorporating motion graphics and user experience (UX) design.

While graphic design can be part of digital design, the latter requires a broader understanding of technology and digital interfaces.

Here are some of the key differences between the two:

Graphic designDigital design
Creating visual content for print and digital media alikeProducing visuals incorporated solely across digital platforms
Static imagesInteractive and dynamic elements
Aesthetic consistency and clarity in printed and static formatsFocus on user interaction, experience, and engagement
Fixed dimensions and formatsResponsive designs for various screen sizes
Designed for visual appreciationDesigned for interaction
Performance or user interaction is often unmeasurableDesign effectiveness can be analyzed through data metrics like views and button clicks

How much do digital design companies charge for their services?

Digital design companies typically charge between $11,000 and $70,000 for their services. The cost varies based on the type of service, project scope, pitching fees, number of revisions, and expected delivery time.

Here’s a price breakdown of the different offerings included in the service:

  • Brand Identity: $1,000-$5,000+
  • Logo: $2,000-$8,000+
  • Website design and development: $5,000-$30,000+
  • Visual style guide: $2,500-$5,000+
  • Editorial style guide: $1,500-$4,000+
  • Brand Book: $3,000-$4,000+

The top 50 digital design agencies on DesignRush charge an average hourly rate of $77. Approximately 14.8% of these agencies take on projects with budgets below $1,000, serving smaller-scale needs. On the other hand, 1.4% of agencies require a minimum budget of $50,000, providing design solutions with higher scopes, holistic rebranding strategies, and premium creative services that enhance digital aesthetics and accelerate brand positioning.

Why should I hire a digital design company?

You should hire a digital design company because it delivers specialized expertise beyond basic design skills, offering a holistic approach to digital aesthetics, functionality, and user engagement. These agencies leverage emerging design trends and technologies to craft visually stunning and highly effective digital assets that deliver memorable and pleasant user experiences.

Hire digital design companies because they:

  • Bring expert knowledge in digital design and current trends
  • Can introduce high-quality, captivating designs across your digital platforms
  • Develop user-friendly interfaces that improve customer experience
  • Ensure brand consistency across all platforms
  • Use advanced design tools and technologies
  • Conduct design audits to uncover areas of improvement across the UX/UI
  • Can be more cost-effective than maintaining an in-house design team
  • Can help you differentiate your brand with a distinct visual identity
  • Adapt designs to changing market trends and user preferences

Success Story

The following case study illustrates the impact of these benefits in a real scenario and how collaborating with a specialized digital design agency can be transformative for a business.

  • Challenge: Canada Beef Inc. needed a complete redesign of its RoundUp app to better relay practical cooking insights to food enthusiasts and amateur cooks. The goal was to provide an easily navigated tool with detailed tips and recipes while accommodating Canada's multilingual and diverse population.
  • Solution: Zazz updated the app's layout with visual references and descriptions of various meat cuts, featured video tutorials, and optimized the search capabilities, allowing users to filter recipes by cooking method. The app was reconfigured with a distinct color palette and typography, and the content was adapted for English, French, and Spanish audiences. The Zazz team integrated social media APIs and chat functionalities.
  • Results: The revamped RoundUp app has become a popular resource for meet fans, amassing over 100,000 downloads on the Google Play Store.

How do I choose the best digital design agency for my business?

To choose the best digital design agency for your business follow these steps:

  1. Define your needs
Determine what you wish to achieve with your digital design project: improved user experience, visually appealing interfaces, or enhanced functionality. Identify your challenges and set short-term and long-term objectives.
  2. Set a budget
Establish a realistic, tangible budget for your project’s scope and goals. Strive for a balance between cost-effectiveness and quality of service.
  3. Research and gather references
Start by exploring marketplaces, listings, community forums, and agency directories like DesignRush to find digital design agencies with a solid track record. Gather recommendations from industry peers and compile a preliminary list of potential candidates based on their reputation and client feedback.
  4. Evaluate their portfolio
Examine the portfolios of the agencies on your list. Look into their experience with projects similar to yours, paying attention to design aesthetics, functionality, and innovation.
  5. Check their expertise in digital design
