Content marketing is the substance, i.e., the strategy of creating value to build a relationship with the intended audience. SEO is the visibility or the technical process of making that value discoverable by search engines.
Essentially, they are two sides of the same coin: SEO makes demands (keywords, structure), and content marketing fulfills them.
Across both practices, quality comes first. Namely, if the piece is optimized for a search engine but fails against the intent of the reader, the content will eventually lose its rank because it lacks topical authority.
