The homepage fonts are actually PNG files -- not live text -- which explains the perfect lockup of type. However, the grittyness of the typeface completes the older look and feel, and is a nice touch. The simplicity of the site is fantastic; the only call to action on the homepage which is "Play Ball," which is a perfect play on words for this baseball site.Â
The hamburger navigation, although simple, further engages users when it turns into a baseball as a mouse hovers on it. Then, with one click of the menu, users receive an additional layer of opacity on top of the video loop. Plus, page links are left-to-right aligned and easily distinguished due to the navigational hierarchy.
The War Years subpage extends the look and feel of the homepage. When users land on this page, they are met with a video grain looping on top of a historic image with a full orange overlay. The page is identified by a nice graphic smack dab in the center of the page. As the user scrolls, parallax shifts the content up and fades the graphic out, bringing the headline and body copy to the forefront of the page. The background imagery features shots of the players, owners, management, and stadium, while a timeline appears on the left-hand side, displaying the subtitles for the section the viewer is currently on.Â
Light and dark panels provide juxtaposition that separates content on the page and breaks up the stark light background. The statistics and historical information -- such as a letter form the White House and signed baseball team photos -- are displayed in large fonts, adding value to the page and making the content even more interesting.Â
Finally, users engage more uniquely with the content, as it shifts from left justified to center before fading out.Â
History buffs and baseball fans alike will love the St. Louis Browns Historical Society website. This online destination displays a constantly looping vintage video from the early days of the St. Louis Browns baseball team, while the monochromatic look sets the tone for the entire site.
St. Louis Browns is a great website design in the Sports & Leisure industry.
